I have a chance to purchase this Tacori platinum HT2513 princess cut ring (figures, right after I purchase one) and can still take mine back. Can anyone tell me what this is worth and I should offer? Either the setting alone, or the total package? It's brand new, never worn. All I have is the appraisal from the previous owner, but the diamond has a GIA # inscribed so I'm assuming it's GIA. The number does not pull anything up however.

Look up comparable .75 princesses in the PS search at the top of the page and compare. Then look up the MSRP for that tacor setting. Highly unlikely you're getting a deal.

MSRP on the Tacori setting alone is around $10,000 it shows on Solomon Bros website. What should I offer if I were to get it?
 
The PS search is showing H VS1 princesses in the .78 range for about $2500 at the most. Pre-owned knocks that price down by at least 30-40%. Do you like that particular setting or the name? I think you can get a similar looking fantastic setting for $3000 at the most (not Tacori but even the top quality custom settings from the top PS vendors are $4-5k at most), bringing you to $5500 for a brand new ring with upgrade policy and 30 return policy. A $2500 diamond in a $10,000 setting seems absurd...

I actually already have a Tacori 2510 (pictures in the SMTB section), which is what I feel my future fiancé will like the best. I just thought this ring would be a deal too good to pass up for the price ($3,500) and would be worth buying for no other reason than to trade in and use the money to purchase the matching band to the 2510. Should I look into this for this price or does this seem too good to be true and run away quickly? The story I was told was the couple just moved into town and are trying to get back on their feet from their previous location. :?
 
It is crazy to think someone would stick a 2500 stone in a 7-10k setting. I agree. Still I think if you love it and the setting then it's probably worth what they are asking at 3,500 ish.


How are you going to get a trade in? I am not understanding that part.
 
Sorry if I'm confusing you, it's late and been a long day. :wacko: The couple has the ring and is wanting to get $3,500 for it and has an appraisal for it for $13,465 from a jeweler with all the details in the original post. After looking online, it looks like the setting is around $10,000 and the diamond is ~$2,500-$3,000. I agree, I would have much rather spent $10,000 on a diamond for a $2,500 setting...

I thought about if it is worth, say $10,000 total, purchasing it to take to a jeweler to sell/trade in and use the money towards the matching band to my 2510 ring I already have. Although I would assume if I would get say $5,000 for the ring at a jeweler they would have already done that LOL Just looking at a possible option to get a little extra cash to help pay for the Tacori band I still need to buy.
 
Yes. Exactly. It's a Tacori ring, but it's only worth what you can get for it. And pre-owned jewelry is not fetching a premium because of the economy, a lot of people are selling their jewelry. It was a foolish investment on the couple's part because settings devalue DRAMATICALLY once you 'drive them off the lot' so to speak. If they had invested the money on the center, they would be able to recoup a lot more than what they are getting offered right now.

I'm not saying you can't get more for it than they are getting. I think if I resold it I could get more than 3500. But it would take a long time. You would have to find someone who A) Is willing to consider a second hand ring and B) wants a princess under a carat and C) loves that setting and D) wears that size.

As someone looking to resell I would have to see what else I can buy for that money (3,500) that might sell better. And well... I think there are better items to "flip" and resell out there.

This is a great opportunity for someone, but it's for someone who wants to keep the set and wear it as is. It's not really a great flip item.
 
How much is the band you are wanting? why not just use the $3500 you'd use to buy the second hand ring to trade and put it directly towards your band? Seems like a lot less hassle without the risk, IMO.

I agree with Gypsy, seems like a good deal for someone who wants to keep and wear it but not a good flip item, too many variables.
 
ANY statement of value must contain an element of what it’s worth to whom, when and under what circumstances. How much a Tacori dealer would charge you for a new one today is a valid enough definition for the right circumstances but that doesn't seem to be the question at hand. How much could YOU get for it on resale is an equally valid definition that yields a completely different answer. There are others. One thing we know…. How much your seller can get. If they could get more they surely would so we’re looking at $3500. Are you a better salesperson than them? Maybe. Not everyone is equally skilled or has equal patience at this sort of thing but now we’re talking about attributes of you and your seller, not of the merchandise. Is there another one out there that you might be able to buy? Again, maybe. Go shopping. It’s a popular enough design and Tacori has sold enough of them to the public that it seems decently likely that someone somewhere is selling one. Are they advertising in a way that makes it possible for you to both find them and to convince you to do business with them? Maybe. Now we’re talking about THEM.

As a rule, don’t buy things just because you think they’re a bargain unless you’re doing this as a business and you're confident in your sales skills. As a consumer, buy what you like and don’t expect to ever see your money again. If you want to be in the business, pay attention to the sales end. That’s the hard part. Buying stuff is easy, selling stuff is hard. There are people who buy and sell jewelry and make a profit at it, and there are even a few who make a pretty good living at it, but we’re back to talking about you, not jewelry. Do you want to be a jeweler?

Trade-in is a function of the jeweler your trading with. If you've got a jeweler in mind and a particular ring you want to trade for, I would start with a conversation with them about it. Policies vary a lot from one to the next but I definitely would not assume that they'll take a trade just becasue Tacori can get a lot for new ones like it. Ask.
