I received this ring, with a matching pendant, as a birthday gift from my fiance's parents. I know they belonged to his grandma, but we're not sure what kind of stone it is. It is a beautiful light purple stone that almost glows pink in certain lighting. It is translucent, but not as much as it appears in these pictures. I don't care about the quality, I love it, I'm just curious what the stone might be. Any ideas?

I would guess spinel or sapphire. Could be synthetic of either of those too. A jeweler should be able to tell you relatively easy.

What a sweet gift from your future in-laws:)

Could also be amethyst, which can be a light purple with pink flashes. One of my favorite gemstones actually.

My first guess synthetic spinel, second guess maybe an Amethyst.

Beautiful ring - the setting is really special - I would guess the stone is Amethyst, perhaps a lighter-colored variety called Rose de France - if you are very interested (and/or to document the heirloom piece for you and future generations) you could send the entire ring to AGL for a Gem Brief ($85 for mounted stone identification, plus shipping)

I am not an expert but I would guess a synthetic or an ammy.

Thanks everyone!
