About 1964 my grandfather opened a bank account and the bank gave an “emerald and diamond” necklace for opening it. I was 5. He got one for me and one for my sister who was 3. Picture a princess Diana ring in green. We never knew if it was real but we thought we were princesses and the luckiest girls in the world. It was probably cz and green cabochon marble but we were in love. We wore them till around college. I have no idea what happened to them but from then on I was sparkle hooked. We are both April babies and have loved diamonds since.

A pearl documentary on PBS at age 6 or 7. I was fascinated and watched patients. Haven’t been able to get enough since then!

My friends joke when I’m senile they will give me a piece of tin foil to stare at and say “ooo, shiny!”

My grandma's ruby and diamond earrings. Old cut rubies and oec diamonds. My aunt got them because she was the only daughter. I found out that she lost one and sold other to pay for hip replacement and wish I had the opportunity to buy. My dad felt the same way but she didn't tell anyone. I still think those earrings were amazing.

When I was about 5, Dad bought me a little adjustable "sapphire" ring.
Sapphire was my birthstone, and I was forever changed.

Barbie's ering. Seriously. The fashion was alright, her hair was fun to brush for all of a minute, but that 'sparkly' thing on her finger was what really captured my interest.

After that, I'd say my 13th bday - my parents drove me to several stores to shop for and choose an opal ring. It was such a fun, exciting, and memorable day. We kept looking 'til I found The One. When I tried it on, my mom said 'That's the reaction I have been waiting for!' :))

My mother's e-ring: A 1-carat round diamond in a classic, beautiful yellow gold solitaire setting. It was utterly elegant. I was in love with that piece from as early on as I can remember...and I still am. I'm convinced that was the ring that triggered my lifelong obsession! (We were all heartbroken when it was stolen :cry2:).

Even as a 5 year old I loved nothing more than playing in my grandmas jewellery box. I used to clean them all for her.
I was very honored to receive after her passing, the gold heart locket (for my 21st) her opal ring (worn within an inch of its life) and her gold charm bracelet which included her original wedding ring (so tiny). These are my most precious pieces and are safely locked away. My heart would shatter if ill were to befall them.
My first jewellery purchase (age 10 I think) was a horseshoe shaped gold signet ring with a microscopic ruby. I saved my pocket money and chore money for over a year to buy it. I also still have my gold Christening brooch.
And another special piece of mine is a horse shape brooch, it’s aluminum I think.

When I was younger, I bought a 0.25 carat marquis solitaire for dirt cheap. I was hooked since. On the diamonds ns finding them for a good price o_O

I’m interested in hearing from the men too! DF? why did you fall in love with diamonds?

When I was very young (think - 4/5), my aunt had a foil backed crystal heart-shaped necklace. It flashed all sorts of pastel colors. I utterly adored it.

When I was about 8, I received a beautiful Bella doll. She had a gorgeous white dress with a blue satin tie on the waist, and she had a little 'gold' bar-pin brooch with a blue swallow on the corner, and the bar was engraved - 'Bella'. To me, that pin on that doll was everything.

My mother had a few pieces that used to make my eyes stand out on sticks - not necessarily expensive pieces but, you know, I was very young and thought all jewelry was luxurious!

But that heart pendant and Bella's brooch were the tipping point for me.

My mom's wedding set which I was given when you she passed away when I was 8. It went missing for a few years and then I found it again and wore it throughout high school on my right hand, needless to say wearing a wedding set in high school, it got a lot of attention. It was an illusion setting with a wee bitty very high quality diamond in the center and four little diamonds on each side in a square head, white gold and platinum.

Unfortunately they were stolen years ago but I still have a very soft spot for illusion set rings just like hers and bought my own this year as my holy grail ring.

I see you know the same pain for a stolen, deeply sentimental ring. Whenever I think about the theft of my mom's ring, I get an acute physical pain in my heart. Though this was actually her second e-ring. Her first wedding set was handed down to me, but somehow I managed to lose the wedding band last year! I cried a lot of tears over that because it was sooo beautiful and my mom wore it as a 20-year-old bride. I'm still kicking myself over it. :(2

IMG_20180311_171231.jpgThis. Great Aunt’s pearl & OEC ring dating from 1895-1900. It was her 25th Birthday present from Uncle Jack. I still have the receipt, dated 14th October 1940, cost barely a few pounds & the description reads “Antique French Natural Pearl & Diamond Cluster, 18ct & Platinum.” Apparently I used to pull it from her hand & wear it on my index finger from age 5. I was, and still am, mesmerised by this ring & loved this lady dearly. We lost her in 2014 only 6 months from her 100th Birthday & she left me this ring in her Will. She always referred to it at “Alex’s pearl.” Pearl is my Birthstone.

Yes losing a sentimental piece is the worst! Possible the wedding band could still show up? You never know. My rings are long gone, probably melted down for nothing. We lived in a condo and our next door neighbor disappeared soon after and his unit went into foreclosure. That's okay though, can't run from karma!

A ring my mom bought me when we were out buying school clothes. I was 6 and it was an emerald shaped green stone. It was propaply a couple of dollars but it was beautiful to me.

Before that I had always loved my mom and great aunt’s jewelry. My great aunt had the coolest jewelry. She was in her 80’s when I was a little kid and had a jewelry box and drawer full of beautiful paste jewelry.

@Alex T I have always loved your pearl and diamond ring. It looks beautiful with your thin gold band. The story behind the ring is equally beautiful.

Thank you! I have very strong memories of coveting this ring, which twinkles like nothing else I have ever owned. This thread is fascinating to read. We all seem to recall a very clear point at which we fell in love with jewellery!

My mothers 1 carat engagement ring, she was engaged in 1949. I think it was a transitional cut because it had unbelievable rainbow colors emitting from it. that thing was gorgeous (and there was a BLACK carbon spot in the middle but I didn't notice that till I was in my 30s).. that set me on my love of diamonds.

ETA:
@KristyDarling me the same! my mom washed her hands in a washroom on her way to FL from NY in Maryland, remembered in Georgia, her engagement ring was never to be seen again.. I was heart broken, she meh! not so much.. she had zero interest in jewelry!

Someone (maybe my parents or grandparents?) gave me a "baby birthstone ring" - it was just a yellow gold band with a small diamond (likely CZ) set in four prongs. I wore it until I was out of high school. I got it when I was 4 or 5... I'm not sure exactly when, but I'm thinking Christmas or birthday (April). Every single year for birthday and Christmas, my sisters (2 years younger) asked for toys from Santa (or from parents when we were older)... I asked for a ring. Yep, from age 6 to about age 14, all I wanted was a ring! Then when I got into high school, I asked for clothes mostly... because I ran out of fingers (it was the 90's -- don't judge!! LOL). One year, I got a ring from my boyfriend I'd dated for 43 years. ;)

It's a tie between my great grandmother's ER and my mom's Cartier Black Opal ring.

Sending hugs.
I have lots of lovely jewellery but it’s my special inherited pieces locked in the safe. Their value is part of my heart not their resale prices.

When I was very young (maybe 3 or 4), my father bought me a sterling silver & tourquise ring. It is elongated, marquise shaped, with a lot of filigree, and engraving around the stone.
I still have that ring; it fits on my pinkie finger, now.
It’s even more dear to me, since my father tragically passed away when I was 6. He was 41 years old. (7/23/1939-5/5/1981).

My great-grandmother's engagement ring. She gave it to my mother shortly after she got engaged. There is a thread devoted to that beauty somewhere on here. It is truly amazing at least in my eyes.

When I was a born, till I was 11, my mom and I lived with my aunt and uncle. My aunt (who I called Nana) had a beautiful 2 ct D flawless diamond in a platinum solitaire setting. She would let me put it on my finger but always told me she had promised it to her other niece. It did go to the other niece, but it lit a beautiful diamond fire within me.

I don't know about specific bling, because I loved it all. But I can pinpoint my basic addiction to having read and loved this children's book, so I was under 10 for sure. Anyone old enough to remember these? I loved science.

My father gave me a 1/4 ct diamond ring when I was 12 . It was sparkly and full of rainbows and got me hooked on a lifelong love of diamonds .

My great aunts engagement ring, 1.2 ct diamond cluster in platinum, bought for her in 1927, she wore it all her life.
