I don''t mean the weight of lifting your hand etc. What is the the largest carat weight for your age, lifestyle, including the people around you?

I''ll go first. I love diamonds, and realistically, a 2.5 ct would be a dream, but my friends and family around me wear modest stones, the largest around 1.5 ct. We are all in our 30''s with young kids and/or dual income families (read: not enough $$$$ on a single income), and I''m fairly active (gym 5 days a week). I''m also pretty involved with my church and definitely do not see women at my church wearing large diamonds. So I guess what I''m trying to say is that my upgrade (currently have 1.25) will probably be 2ct or LESS.

My 2.26 asscher is probably as large as I'd care to go.
Asschers face up small so I'd guess it looks about the size of a 1.75 ct round.

But you know, if someone gave me a fancy vivid blue flawless 3-ct Octavia I may just bend my rule.

I think I see what you mean but I would not kick a larger stone out of bed for eating crackers.

Not even if my family, friends and priest were all gawping.

I would wear a 2, 3, 4, or 5ct + with pride. The thing is, the larger the stone the greater likelihood that folks will think it is diamond-light or similar bought from QVC.

Can't please all of the people all of the time so you might as well please yourself and buy/wear a honker if you want.

1.25 is a great size (bigger than mine) , but I understand an upgrade is in the offing so enjoy it!

Maybe around a carat. I have a centre stone that''s just under half a carat. For my lifestyle and area it''s large. I don''t wear it all the time. I find a prefer to wear a band most days.

4cts Emerald cut

I don''t know exactly. I''m obviously a huge fan of diamonds but something really huge (say over 2 carats for me) would not be practical. Plus I''m pretty clutzy.

My *hand* could easily carry a five carat Asscher ... but I''d never be able to face my friends & family carrying that kind of bling. It would just be so out of proportion to the rest of my life that it would be CRAZILY IRRESPONSIBLE. What I currently have, 1.5ct, seems both *right* and *luxurious* to me -- and about the most I''d feel *comfortable* wearing. So I''m lucky that way!

Now, if I won the lottery ...

No size limit with me. The largest one I ever tried on was about 20 carats, and it looked and felt mighty fine.

I have small hands (4.25 - 4.5 ring size) and my fingers aren''t hugely long. I''m also majorly klutzy and always knocking in things. On top of all that I dress fairly conservatively and often casually, don''t run around in socialite circles and, even though I''m not young anymore, and often look much younger than I actually am. As a result of all this, the absolute total max I would go is 2 carat for an EC and for a brilliant cut total max would be around 1.5.

I have a 3 stone engagement ring (.92 RB center with .20 pears on each side, 4.5-4.75 ring size), and if I was to modify it, I''d probably go no higher than 1.5 (at the most) with .30 sides. I think. I''m not good at figuring out appropriate proportions. I think anything larger would look silly on me.

I dont think I have a size limit. I have stopped caring whether or not others think its fake or real or whatever. I wear a size 8- 8 1/2 ring so I can carry off huge stones with no problem. I thought I would be bowled over with a 3 carat princess, but after a couple of weeks I thought meh.. I can go bigger.. BUT with no upgrade policy on non-signature stones, that thought must quickly be banished! Im now thinking of collecting crazy sized colored stones. Big and Bold totally fits my personality!

Well, I don''t have or tried anything bigger than what I wear at the moment which is a little over 5CT
I *think* that 5.5CT is all I can wear really as around me and where I live, no one has something like that.
In the office, I am referred to the "honking rock office girl"... So that tells you enough...

Oh, I forgot about that one....I don''t see anyone with anything larger than 1.5 ct at my company either. My boss (she''s a really young VP) is European, and only wears a gold band on occasion. Did I mention she''s a VP? She has the huge house, an au pair for her kids but no diamonds....

The number keeps changing. I just got my 2.7 in today, and I love it, and it''s as big as I''d go... ask me again in another couple of years and I may well say something different

I am old enough and make enough that no one would question any size I wear.

I''d go as big as I could afford.

I have the biggest e-ring of all my friends, so for now I''m good. I think my overall limit would probably be 5cts. In my dreams.

I can carry any size off. Big or small. It's all about attitude and confidence

I think a 2.5 ct. center stone would look just fine on me

I''d wear any size...I just don''t think I would like much bigger than 5 carats on me. Not that that will ever be a problem I will have to mitigate

For me, it depends on the situation:

Where I live right now (downtown, major city, not so great neighborhood): 1 carat.
If I lived in a nicer place/for my age and peer group: 2 -2.5 carats (it would be way bigger than my friend''s rings, but they''re not as into diamonds as me.)
Later on in life: Bring it on baby.

My MAX would be 1.5ct (or around 7.5mm). That is still pushing it though. My preferable level is between 1ct and 1.25ct (6.5mm and 7mm). My finger size is 5.25. Not as tiny fingers as some of the women on here have, however, I would say I have rather petite features and DH still likes to refer to my fingers as "alien-skeleton fingers". To me it also has to do with the depth of the stone...I just don't like to wear jewelery that has to sit up high either.

Not having anything to do with what others think though. What I do have is actually smaller for probably my age, own peer group, and for what people expect my income to be and so forth (especially as my center stone preferences are not diamonds but rather colored stones to begin with....that tends to throw people off around these parts) though it is a larger stone for the city in which I have been living the last year or so as many people here marry very young. I don't think most people around here upgrade.

As background, I am 30 and DH is 35 (and we just married in January). No children. While we have savings and are not just starting out, we do have a pretty low-key lifestyle and budget right now due to several changes in our lives over last few years.

I also have a very active lifestyle (run 6+ miles a day, hot yoga at least a couple times a week, camping, hiking, kayaking, etc). Elaborate jewelery or big stones just do not work into that for me personally ....I get uncomfortable wearing even my smaller stones doing those things!

I have some rings that have colored gems that would be the equivalent face up size of a 2-3ct and I barely ever wear them. I find I catch them, bang them, jab myself with them, knock them, and so on.

Also, I just do NOT wear a lot of jewelery and like to keep it simple. If a ring needs too much special attention or care or is too elaborate or large...I just won't be bothered to wear it as often. As an example of my boring and lazy jewelery style I have been wearing the same white gold studs for three years.

Ideally, given all I said above, I should really just stick to a plain band....heck originally I opted out of an engagement ring altogether and only opted to get one after we were married...however I do like some extra sparkle and fun! Which is really why I like hanging out on PS. Though I don't feel comfortable wearing larger stones....I sure like to ADMIRE other peoples stones!

In a round, probably 2.5 - 3 carats.

For a cushion or emerald cut, 3 - 3.5 carats.

I''m comfortable wearing my 2 ct stone, and I''d be comfortable wearing something much larger.

I don''t really care what other people would think of a young woman wearing a large stone. It''s none of their business, and I''m extremely happy to live my life according to my own beliefs and preferences. The less I worry about how others perceive me, the happier I am.

10 carats. FOR REAL. lol (In RB)

I''d wear 20 carats (cushion or anything else that faces up smaller than RB) too. I mean, if I could afford it.

I don''t think ANYONE would think it''s real on me so I think i''m pretty darn safe. :D :D

Honestly, I think practicality is a bigger hindrance than society ... given the way I dress generally, I doubt anybody is going to think a *ring* is over the top unless it has moving parts and flashing lights. Let''s just say I believe in dress-as-costume, and have fun accordingly. So, practically? For an everyday ring, I don''t think I''d want to go above 12 mm or so. So ... 5 carats or so in a round? Up to 7 or 8 in one of the deeper cuts.

On the other hand, there''s the practical factor of what my future likely holds ... I''m a thirtysomething college professor married to a management consultant. For my day-to-day life, my 1.5 carat is appropriate and comfortable, and I don''t really believe in upgrades. When I hit my 40s, though? I can see myself going for a 2+ carat marquise anniversary ring to be worn on special occasions with a smile on my face and a song in my heart ....

Agreed!

And it sure makes life a lot more fun and easygoing too.

i can handle a 2.5ct rb w/o any problem.

I''ve always thought something in the 2 ct. range would be as big as I could comfortably wear (size and lifestyle) but since I love Asschers and they generally face up smaller, I think the max for me would be a 2.5 ct. Asscher. I am already planning that 2 ct. upgrade....:-)

If I were to get any other shape (RB, Cushion) 2 ct. would be the max.

Hmmm... for every day wear, I think 2 ct for a RB or 2.5 for a fancy would be about my max. My peer group seems to wear anything from .5 to about 1 ct so I already stand out...
