wear?

On the recent Mariah Carey thread, someone mentioned that she should get a more wearable size for daily wear. It got me thinking what is the largest size that can still be comfortable. I realised that a 3 ct diamond/sapphire/etc will have different dimensions due to cut and shape. Besides, there is also the issue of setting height and stone depth to consider. But generally what is the largest carat, or face up in mm, or depth of stone/setting (if you know) that you find comfortable for daily wear? I'm just referring to largest comfortable dimensions when we have to work out/type/etc (of course some don't wear rings when working out) but you get the point it's about your daily regular activities. Let's ignore factors like social circle, work causing some of us to have to wear smaller than we would like. I'm certain I miss out some other aspects but I'm just interested to hear from everyone.

Just realised finger size plays a part too. If one has a size 2 finger, then her largest comfortable dimensions can't be too large. So please share your finger size too if you don't mind.

For daily 24/7 wear (never ever taking it off), very low set 7 mm-ish bezel set. If it is daily but not 24/7 (removed for housework), then I can wear 8 to 10 mm comfortably if prong set very low. For reference, I have a size 4.5 finger.

Well, if I totally ignored work/social circle factors, I would probably be comfortable with a 3 carat OEC. But with social factors, the largest I am comfortable with is around 7mm--which for me is my 1.43 OEC. Any larger than that, and I think it would look fake or I would feel endangered for people thinking I'm super wealthy. I like to wear 3 stacking rings with my solitaire, so the finger real estate is kinda small. Ring size is around 5.5.

I wear a 8.5mm round in size 5 semi-bezel setting daily. it's very comfortable but if I were to upgrade for daily wear, I'd say 9.5mm round ot 10mm step cut would be the largest stone in a solitaire setting. Side stones would probably reduce the center size because there's only 15mm in my rough estimate across the top of size 5 finger.

Re: What is the largest carat/mm you find comfortable for da

My finger is 5.5 and I would be comfortable with a 10mm round for everyday wear, in a simple low solitaire setting.

I only know this because I have a wonderful 10mm CZ in that kind of setting, which sparkles and throws colored fire like the real thing.

If I had a real super-ideal-cut 10mm diamond and I wore it every day, there might be some social embarrassment on my part, but I don't find that size too big purely on a personal level.

I think I would find 10mm too big in a halo, unless it was a very thin one.

My 3 ct was 9.3 and I think that is the largest daily wear I could do. Sometimes I felt a little nervous about wearing that size in public.

Probably a 10mm round. My current ring is had about a 8mm round, and it is set pretty low, so I can handle a couple more mm.

Physically comfortable? I don't know, probably 3-4 carats in a low profile setting if I think in terms of gardening and working out.

I have been wearing a 8mm x 13mm pear for the last 20 years. It does get caught on rubber gloves when I do dishes because it is set rather high. Size 4.25 ring.

My 8.4 mm CBI is set rather low because it is a RHR, but I think I could go up to 9.4mm. The shank is pretty gouged up already after a year. Size 4.5 ring.

8mm round would be my max in comfort and wearability. Finger size a very temperamental 4.75.

Re: What is the largest carat/mm you find comfortable for da

So my FI actually took this very seriously into consideration when buying my engagement ring. I have a 10mm in double halo (Margeaux) that spans about 16 or 17 total mm across. I love it to death, but only wore it maybe 2-3 times a week. So FI wanted something that I can wear daily. My life consists of 60+ students from age 3 to 15, half with cognitive delays/ developmental diagnosis, and plenty of behavioral issues. My e-ring looks less... Well.. "Madelise-y". BUT I haven't taken it off once since getting engaged. It's 9.38mm tall and 7.85mm wide. I wear size 6.5, which is 16.92mm diameter width. That's 46.4% finger coverage in width. I'd say 50% width is about max I can do for day-to-day every wear, however I'm a size ho and love 75%+ finger coverage more for aesthetics. It's just harder to wear daily.

Madelise, thanks for putting them into relative form. It makes for a much easier gauge. So it seems the answers so far are around 60%. I'm a 6.5, around 17mm across but I've never try wearing a 15-16mm on a daily basis, so I've no idea if I can go as big as 15-16mm (time to look into more large CS rings :Up_to_something: ). But I think I can handle a not deep 12mm across (like rose cut), or normal 10mm across on a daily basis. 59% coverage.

Size 7 here. I'd not go above a 1.4 ct round.

I have a 2 carat, but probably would be down to do a 3-4 carat as well. If it's a cushion, could definitely do a 4 carat. 5.25 ring size for reference.

I think I could wear a 12mm OEC no problem. Low set solitaire. I have a size 5.75/6 ring finger so it looks proportionally pleasing to my eye. Right now I wear about a 10.5mm OEC and it is never an issue so yeah I think I could easily go up to 12 if not larger. :naughty: :Up_to_something:

I am a size 5.75 and currently wear a 10+mm daily. I don't think I would have a problem tolerating a 12mm though

Re: What is the largest carat/mm you find comfortable for da

I wear an over 11mm 5+ carats for everyday wear no problem, size 4.75 and 5.00 the other hand. I actually find the smaller stone which is 8.50mms in the halo I think needs more care than the big OEC because of the sturdy simple setting the big old gal is in. If I found something I liked that was bigger again the amount of wear would probably depend on the comfort and the durability of the setting.... Having said that I take my rings off at home a lot of the time because I do a lot of things like renovating, painting, gardening etc work with my hands.

Mine is approximately 11 mm and that works just fine :) No problems except when I'm dehydrated and the ring starts spinning :) My ring size is a small 48 mm circumference, which I believe is a 4.5.

Just kidding. Margeaux actually is larger than my finger. She spills over to my middle and pinky just a bit. So clearly, I LOVE finger coverage. I just can't wear her daily.

so yeah, definitely at least 75% finger coverage for aesthetics.

Someone once posted to me and I have quoted her before though I cannot remember WHO!!! Said the best aesthetic size is the same millimeter diameter as your intended finger's fingernail.

My 8.4mm OEC is in a halo that spans 11.7mm on my size 4 finger. I wear it every single day except maybe 2 or 3 days per month at most.

I think that comment was from Circe. Great advice :appl:

I have a ring size of 8.25. When I wore a halo, it was 12mm in diameter and I felt comfortable wearing in almost every situation (except when wearing sweats at the grocery store [meaning the ring felt too dressy for the outfit] and on subways when traveling). If we're talking a solitaire, though, I'd personally prefer a 10mm stone, set low.

Re: What is the largest carat/mm you find comfortable for da

My current ring is 2.5ct cushion at 8mm. My finger size is around 16.3mm, so just shy of 50% coverage. I think this is my sweet spot for a solitaire diamond.

I do have slightly bigger coloured stones with halos, but I can't imagine wearing them everyday.

I'm thinking 6 mm, or maybe even 5.5 mm. However I can go bigger with a colored stone.
