Our apartment is on the 4th floor, and looks down onto the courtyard of the beautiful hotel angled beside us. It is always fun to look out and see all the fancy cars coming and going, but even MORE entertaining is checking out the action in the 4-star restaurant on their 3rd floor.... just standing at my window, I can see exactly what everyone is eating!! My MIL even bought me a pair of binoculars in case I ever needed to see something up close... a good looking piece of sea bass or extra-crusty creme brulee... haha.

It is such a weird thing to appreciate about where we live, that it made me wonder what other random things people like about their homes or apartments... so please share!!

We have a skylight in our upstairs hall. It''s the old pyramid-style. All the doors in the hallway have glass transoms over them, so the sunlight from the skylight goes into the bathroom, and both bedrooms. It''s really cool and it makes our inside-row home feel like it has lots of sunlight. BUT the skylight has a metal top and when it rains it sounds like it''s hailing! and when the pigeons start landing on it it freaks out the cats! We noticed some leaking from it earlier this year and were told that if it was leaking, we''d have to remove it because they can''t fix them anymore... but luckily we figured out it was the roof and not the skylight. Whew!
 
Our apartment is waaaaaay longer than it is wide. Rowhouse? It drives me mad, such a long wall but we can barely fit more than a couch and our entertainment center! The odd thing is there is so much closet space. It''s insane. Every remarks about it.
 
Our (new) old, craftsman house *that we're moving into in 3 weeks! YAY!* is green with a purple porch (exterior). It also has a blue staircase (interior). Well, the wood is stained a teal color. It sounds funky, and it is, but it works really well.
 
Last fall my husband painted my house a light lavender color. I have darker lavendar shutters and a walnut stained front door. My 10 year old son calls it the purple house. The house next door to me is school bus yellow. I''ve always given directions that involve "if you pass the school bus yellow house you''ve gone too far." Funny thing is the yellow house people tell me they now give directions by "if you pass the purple house...."

My yard is very cottagey and full of flowers so the lavender scheme works well. But I still think it''s pretty amazing my hubby actually agreed to painting it for me. Such a girly house for me...and 3 boys.
 
our home is a relatively new townhouse so nothing is super interesting or weird about it, i think that the best thing is that it's the only house in the complex that has a view like we do. on one side we see all the neighborhood houses as we are on the outskirts of the complex. then on the back windows we see the park and a pretty decent view of the downtown area. only on one side do we see another townhouse, so we are the only one that has the front view of a real neighborhood (and all the houses are short while ours is 3 stories so we have a great view over the top of the houses and into tons of trees and blue sky which is soo nice), and the back view of grass and buildings rather than another townhouse. it was funny, when we bought the house we liked where it was (on the neighborhood street), but it wasn't until we had signed everything and gotten into it that the painter guy said 'wow amazing view, you must be looking fwd to seeing that daily' (regarding our park and downtown view) and i looked out the window and said 'OH'...so it was a really nice surprise!! hehe.
 
i have an older house that has a lot of charm and old woodwork. we have a secret room in our closet. theres a mini door that leads to a little room. i discovered it way after we moved in because the door blends with the wall so well.
 
Our condo has an amazing view -- we overlook a park, a pond, and the Boston Archdiocese, which looks like a big castle. In the winter, it''s especially picturesque with the frozen pond and the white field -- so lovely! Very peaceful

Our new-to-us house is old and has some cool aspects to it -- one being the old heating grates in the middle of the floors. They''re very decorative and just look really funky. Also, our basement has got one main room with three smaller rooms off it, and two of those rooms have smaller rooms off of them! It''s neverending storage!

Mister Doorknob refers to our house as THE ROCK. (Not like the beautiful sparkly ones we are all lusting for...but THE ROCK as referenced in a place like Alcatraz...) "He is serving his time doing hard labor at THE ROCK".

We have a house and acreage...lots and lots of oaks trees. We live with 2 seasons...summer and winter...It is A TON of work to maintain because the leaves are either falling dead...or falling green.

I am, by the way affectionately known as the Warden. I keep a steady supply of ice water at the ready. I often reward him with bread...if the yard looks nice.

Our living room is an old Blacksmith''s Shop from pre-1800. It used to be across the street, but the Blacksmith went out of business and a young man bought the building and moved it to where our house is. Down in the basement you can see the handhewn logs that support the floor. The house inspector thought they might be Colonial era.

The front part of the upstairs was probably added next (turning attic space into what''s now a bathroom & guest room) ... and then there are two more sections that have been added on since.

Also - we have a cigarette smoking ghost in our basement. Anyone wanna help me name him?

Have you considered leaving pamplets on the dangers of cigarette smoking? The surgeon generals warning may not have been printed during his era. It is worth a try.

We live in a pretty nondescript condo complex. It''s a small complex, which I like. The downside is that we don''t have ammenities such as a pool or clubhouse, but we save money on condo fees because of that. I would have to say that our condo probably has one of the prettiest views in the complex. We''re in an end unit so there aren''t neighbors on one side. This allows us the chance to admire our side yard with its big trees, boulders, and a perfect out-of-the-way spot for picnicing. On more than one occasion I''ve looked out the slider and have seen wild turkeys (or pheasants??) walking past. It''s a beautiful yard and our view isn''t interupted by neighbors walking in and out, which is good. It makes us feel sort of like we''re in our own house.

One of my students used to talk about his house''s ghost, George, all the time. His mom even saw George on several occasions.

My house is fairly simple, but the yard was landscaped by a botanist who planted close to 30 Rhododendrons and 10-15 Japanese Maples. There are also a wide variety of blueberries and azaleas. The great part about the planning of the yard is nearly all the plants are acid loving, so when the larger trees drop their needles, the needles fertilize the plants below!

It''s a gorgeous yard, but a lot of work. The man who tended to the house for the last 10 years sold it to a couple who almost immeditely sold it the following summer because they couldn''t keep it up. The quickly hired a crew to clean it up and so when we purchased it a couple summers back, we had NO idea how much maintanance it would be. We enjoy it, though, and are always busy.

We have a fabulous Lion''s Head Japanese Maple that I can post a photo of. It''s massive!
 
Okay, here''s a photo. . . hopefully it turns out, as I kept having to resize it smaller and smaller to keep it from going over the size limits. Guess I''ll have to try and take a better pict. later on.

Built in the 19teens bungalow it has original kitchen cabinets with the funky metal twist lock fixtures. Some windows are still the old heavy leaded glass. The doors to the closets are my height (5''8) and all the doorknobs are solid copper.

Neat characteristics to complement the 14 degree pitch from the front to the back of the house

It''s like being in a Willy Wonka room. As you migrate to the back of the house the doorways seem to get shorter as you grow taller.
 
My younger son was born in our house, in our bedroom actually. Now we can never move.

We have a brick Georgian that was built in 1948 and I call it the dollhouse because it''s tiny and may actually have been built for dolls, hee hee. My husband is 6''5" and I''m 5''10" so at times we feel like giants in here. I think we have like 1260 square feet. The closets are all tiny, which I know is characteristic of homes built during that time, but the only way to access the attic storage is a trap door that you pull down from DH''s closet ceiling. This means that we have to take ALL of his clothes and the bar they hang on out of there every season when we need to get things down or put things up there, and it is not our favorite task.

Other than that there are really cool architectural details, the doorways between rooms are arched, and we have a beautiful big picture window in the living room which is nice. Nothing else too weird or fun about the house though, we''re getting a little antsy and are ready to find something bigger soon!
 
The house I grew up in was built by Frank Furness. Our house was named The Breezes. We had a huge tree in the middle of the driveway, that had a hole in it. When ever the wind blew the tree would make a very spooky sound. Almost like a howling sound!!!

And my brother was convinced the house was haunted, that didn't help me much.

I don't know the current owners well, but was told they got rid of the tree, so no more howling noises for them!!!

My guess is it had to be taken down, my parents spent a lot of money on tree suregeons trying to save it. But disease must have gotten to it.
 
Our house was built in the late 1800''s and has been occupied by family ever since. I believe there have been ~10 children born in the house and nobody has confirmed that any deaths occurred in the house. Sometimes strange things will happen - like once I woke up in the middle of the night and I had this feeling that someone was in the room. I didn''t see anything, but it was the strangest feeling. My husband said that he gets that too sometimes so I know it''s not just me.

Our house is next door to what used to be a hotel that burned, causing many people to die in the fire. It is well known in our town that the building is haunted and strange things have happened there. The building is three stories and the entire third story has been shuttered since the fire. Legend goes that you can hear the screams of those that died if you listen. Spooky!
 
Our house is new, built in 2003, so there''s nothing weird, unusual about it. We do have 60+ avacado trees on our property and an amazing view (on a good day we can see the ocean, which is 20 miles away). The best view in the house is in my walk in shower...I spend a lot of time (and waste water!) because I get caught up in staring out the window sometimes.

We''re probably going to be moving this summer and are looking at much older houses (built in the late 1800''s early 1900''s). I''ll probably have more interesting things to share if we relocate.
 
We live in a 100-year old converted wood beam timber loft that used to be an old Chicago warehouse. The previous owner actually bought the two side-by-side units and knocked down the dividing wall and took down one of the kitchens. We have glorious views of downtown, and these really awesome beams running floor to ceiling, which allows us to have a hammock strung up.

It''s something we picked up on a trip to Mexico -- handwoven, gorgeous thick strands of rope, soft as all get out, and on the ends, instead of a normal triangular gather, it has old oxen yoke! (Minus the oxen, of course.) I love that hammock and try to swing in it every day. Very relaxing

However, the best part of the house is that we are about three blocks away from a chocolate factory. About three days a week, there is the most wonderful aroma of chocolate in the air -- it''s not sickeningly sweet, either...it''s a warm cocoa or dark chocolate aroma. I tell people that I live in the best place in the world because we have chocolate air! (And because of DH of course.

Our house isn''t interesting at all; but our yard seems to attract every critter in the neighbourhood. We are hosts to large deer and their families (often all together) at any given time.....

The place I recently moved into is in a complex with apartments being renovated into condos. I really like it here, and I am enjoying finding ways to "sauce it up" as I work on the interior decorating in my condo. It''s a basic nondescript floor plan, and it has a "Jack and Jill" bathroom with two toilet areas surrounding an inner enclosed shower area. I am in the process of turning it into a vintage themed bathroom suite. I have been hitting EBay for tons of authentic 40s and 50s era advertisements to use on the walls. In my bathroom, I will have old makeup and lingerie ads and probably a light mocha, pink, and white color scheme. I''d also like to shadowbox a vintage "torpedo bra"! I had my mother help me install a curved shower bar and put up this shower curtain in the middle of the bathroom, which has beautiful colors and a vintage feel to it. In the shower and guest bathroom, there will be lots of bathing beauties and some additional health and beauty ads with more emphasis on the guys - Barbasol, hair tonics, etc. - and the colors will be in blues and whites. I am excited to get in and paint next week and then start assembling the frames I need for the ads. I have a feeling people will never want to leave my bathroom when they come by!

I have an old farmhouse built in 1920 and added on to a few times so I have a very LONG list of weird things about my house... but the one people seem to get a kick out of is our Iron Maiden room. Off of the upstairs bathroom is a door about 3.5 feet tall and if you open it you go into a very large crawl space that is about 4.5 feet tall in the center and about 12x12 with huge nails sticking out everywhere from the roofers. It gets VERY hot in there and is excellent for drying herbs etc. but looks like a torture chamber. People have said, "oh you could use it for storage" and its true except with 5 buildings on this property, storage is one thing we definitely don''t need more of LOL And our attic looks like the one from the grudge :x In my office closet there are exposed pipes and wallpaper that is about 70 years old. It is very funky but in a cool old house way and I don''t know how to explain that LOL We call the basement The Dungeon. It has three rules: 1. Play fair and share. 2. Use the Potty. and 3. Keep things organized. :)
