what is done with diamond leftovers

this was part II of a question i asked earlier, but no one has answered it.

of course if the pieces are big they are made into diamonds to put into jewelery, what about very small pieces? ones that are so small they really cannot be cut anymore. are there big piles of diamond-ettes somewhere? like chips?

most things that leave scrap can be recycled and used again, or used somewhere else. what happens to the pieces that are to tiny for jewelery???

very small pieces of diamond can be ground in to dust and used as an abrasive to coat polishing wheels and polish more diamonds of course.

size and uniformity of the pieces in mix QC.
Diamond grit for polishing gemstones is usually a lot more expensive because of the quality control.

Not my area of specialization, but tools are still diamond or SiC coated, depending on the what it is use for. Same thing with home hardware like drill bits and grinder.

My Father was an engineer, he showed me a diamond many years ago which was used in a machine, I can't remember what the diamond was used for but it was a big rock!

diamonds are used in manufacturing all the time usually suspended in oil for the finest grits.
DLC has taken over a lot of the market for drill bits and things like that.
(diamond like coating or carbon carbon coating)

This was some years ago, they used to do auto wrapping of food packaging as their main production. They had huge grinding machines as well as the machines that did the wrappings so I am trying to think back as to what the diamond was for. If I remember rightly it was used like a drill bit.

More than likely it has been replaced with carbide and or DLC bits these days.

yup. carbide is used, but sometimes, diamond is still required, as it is harder than carbide, as such, the removal rate on the plate that you might want to polish will be faster. Of course, it is more expensive, thus, its a compromise.

Thanks strmy and Ringho. I am thinking back, this must have been in the seventies so a long while ago. It was pretty big, probably around 3 or 4 cts and I seem to recall it had the odd facet on it.
