What is a Three Coarse Meal?

It may sound silly, but I don''t know what a Three coarse meal is!?!

Is it: Soup, Salad, Entree?
-OR-
Soup or Salad, Entree, Dessert?
-OR-
Something totally different?

I think it's generally the second you mentioned, at least in reference to weddings.

I think it''s appetizer - entree - dessert. The appetizer is often a salad, but can be soup or something completely different!

Now a 5 course meal...soup - salad - appetizer - entree - dessert? Not sure about that one...

My brothers wedding was in sept...he had a cocktail hour then antipasta, choice of pasta, choice of meat or fish, dessert, cake and coffee. what would that be considered?
