what is a shadow band

was looking at rings and one of them came as a set with a shadow band? what is this? what is the purpose? is this to be used as wedding band? why is it called a shadow band? please answer

A shadow band is usually used as a wedding band. It's made to fit around the contours of the e-ring, so it might have a strange shape on it's own, but will fit right up against the other ring and form a "set"
