There are ways to test, some easy, some requiring complicated equipment, but if you know nothing about diamonds the best way is to bring it into an appraiser.
One easy, though not definitive way: Drop it into a glass of water, and slather some butter/margarine on your finger. Poke your finger into the water and touch the crystal. If it sticks to your finger and you can lift it out, it may be a diamond. If not, it's probably something else.
