I was in a store and was told, "Those are our B grade diamonds, and here is our C grade diamonds.."

What does that even mean?

No clue...I have never heard of this... Guessing they have their own grade of stones, but it''s very confusing as its not the norm... Doesn''t translate well, nor is it an industry standard.... Ya got me...

It''s probably something created by that chain/store... if true, that''s an interesting approach. Usually, I walk in and get the spiel about how ALLLL their diamonds are fantastic or "ideal". hahaha. Maybe they''ve sort it out for you... ??

Is there anyone more "in the know" that can answer this? I''m interesting in knowing too.

I will try to ask when I pick up my earrings. Yesterday I got new earrings from there, today I exchanged them for a new pair since one of my stones was already loose. I decided just to forget that pair and get a better set. When I asked the difference between them that is what she said.

My guess is the unset diamonds are their A diamonds, and the set diamonds that are good are B, and the cheapest ones are the C??????/

I was so confused and thought I had missed something big (that''s why I came back to PS with my tail between my legs wondering what I missed)

:D

They rate how hot the bride is.

If she's drop dead gorgeous she gets an A diamond, and so on..

It means absolutely nothing. It is an "in house" grading system using a range of qualities under a specific category like "A" "B" "C"

I''ve known large chain stores throughout my career who used a similar system. It confuses the public. It''s bad for everyone.

One company used "A" through "AAAA" but the very best grade was SI2. Their "special grades" were all "imperfect."

Hmmm It IS confusing. This is a store that is a chain store (several locations within the state), but they are not a B&M really. I consider them a cross between a B&M and a whiteflash

I really like this store because it''s local and their upgrade policy is A+++ to me.

Thanks for your help!

Rapaport parmetrically "grades" round diamonds with A, B or C cut grades. It is a very broad top grade which the trade much prefers and includes many rather ordinary quality cuts, but it is a "system" in current use by some dealers. It is not what I''d call popular or well understood. It also oversimplifies the issues.

LOL!!!! Their VERY best grade was an SI2!!!! What the heck were they thinking?

On second thought, maybe it''s brilliant. Pop me a few "top grade SI2''s" for a high price, then show me a SI2 clarity stone with a much lower price....
