Hi,
I am doing research on colored stones and would like to know what gems come in certain colors. Every time I decide on a color/gem, I find out that another gem comes in the color I am interested in. For example, I am interested in Blue and Pink and researched sapphires then found out Spinels also come in Blue and Pink and had to research spinels since I had never heard of them before (and they seem to be less in cost and just as hard as sapphires). I was hoping to get a list or help from any PSrs so I am not missing out on gems I have never heard of.
***If anyone can please help me with gem names, their rated hardness, and their relative cost to other gems, I would so appreciate it.***
This is what I am interested in and so far what I have learned (please correct me if I am wrong):
1) BLUE - sapphire (hard, more expensive), Spinel (hard, less expensive, "richer" color - was told this by a jeweler and don''t know what it means exactly), tanzanite (soft, middle expensive), diamond (not in my price range so not going there) {looking at cornflower blue or neat freak''s asscher blue}
2) PINK - sapphire (hard, more expensive), spinel (hard, less expensive, "richer" color), diamond
3) BLUE/PURPLE - tanzanite (soft, middle expensive), color changing sapphire (don''t know anything but love "catmom''s". Do you know it is color change when you buy it loose?)
4) (lighter) GREEN - emerald (don''t know anything), tourmaline (don''t know anything but I love "lauren-the-partier''s" lighter green color in her ring or like a Jolly Ranchers color)
5) CLEAR/white - diamond (hard, more expensive), white sapphire (don''t know anything but seems to be opaque?), danburite (don''t know anything)
Thanks in advance to any help whatsoever. I have a little project going on and am trying to be as educated as possible. If anyone has anything else to add that I didn''t ask, please do so.
