Hi,

I am doing research on colored stones and would like to know what gems come in certain colors. Every time I decide on a color/gem, I find out that another gem comes in the color I am interested in. For example, I am interested in Blue and Pink and researched sapphires then found out Spinels also come in Blue and Pink and had to research spinels since I had never heard of them before (and they seem to be less in cost and just as hard as sapphires). I was hoping to get a list or help from any PSrs so I am not missing out on gems I have never heard of.

***If anyone can please help me with gem names, their rated hardness, and their relative cost to other gems, I would so appreciate it.***

This is what I am interested in and so far what I have learned (please correct me if I am wrong):

1) BLUE - sapphire (hard, more expensive), Spinel (hard, less expensive, "richer" color - was told this by a jeweler and don''t know what it means exactly), tanzanite (soft, middle expensive), diamond (not in my price range so not going there) {looking at cornflower blue or neat freak''s asscher blue}

2) PINK - sapphire (hard, more expensive), spinel (hard, less expensive, "richer" color), diamond

3) BLUE/PURPLE - tanzanite (soft, middle expensive), color changing sapphire (don''t know anything but love "catmom''s". Do you know it is color change when you buy it loose?)

4) (lighter) GREEN - emerald (don''t know anything), tourmaline (don''t know anything but I love "lauren-the-partier''s" lighter green color in her ring or like a Jolly Ranchers color)

5) CLEAR/white - diamond (hard, more expensive), white sapphire (don''t know anything but seems to be opaque?), danburite (don''t know anything)

Thanks in advance to any help whatsoever. I have a little project going on and am trying to be as educated as possible. If anyone has anything else to add that I didn''t ask, please do so.

Tourmalines come in pink also. Zircons come in various colors. Kunzite and Morganite come in softer pinks.

Aww thanks SparkleRx! I purchased my color change prior to the setting and I knew up front that it was a color change sapphire. You might have more response to this thread if you have it moved to the Colored Stones forum. We''re a bunch of enablers there and would be happy to help you with colored gems!

Blue/Green - Apatite can be blue/green or more green. Soft and so more suitable to pendants. Can be cloudy looking but clear and they''re gorgeous. Fluorite is very pretty but incredibly soft so ok for earrings and pendants but not normally rings or bracelets.

Blue - Kyanite is normally a lovely deep blue colour and often confused with Sapphire and Tanzanite.

Pink - Kunzite comes in pale pink through to a very vibrant dark lilac-pink. However, be warned, Kunzite can fade. Normally if it''s subjected to strong sunlight but I have a piece that been in my safe in darkness and it''s almost colourless now. Morganite on the other hand doesn''t fade and comes in pinks and peaches. Although Rubellite isn''t pink (it''s a member of the Tourmaline family) it can be a lovely deep raspberry pink. Good Rubellites are expensive but reasonably hardy. Don''t forget about Amethyst. These can range from pink through to purple!

Blue/Purple - Also colour change garnets. They come in various different colourways including green/purple, brown/red, champagne rose/purple, etc etc. Colour change fluorite is also available in a midnight blue to mid/dark purple (see above for softness problems though). Iolite is a blue/purple gemstone (sometimes referred to as the Water Sapphire) - it can also look like Tanzanite and is generally much cheaper.

Lighter Green - Peridot is a yellow/green but very pretty and relative cheap. Chrysoberyl is again a yellow/green (although comes in all shades of green) but has a wonderful sparkle. You mentioned Emerald - this can be light and dark in colour. The Zambian stones tend to be darker green than the Columbian stones - however, Emeralds are reasonably soft and can chip/crack so you do need to be careful. Diopside and Tsavorite Garnet come in all shades of green and are hardier than Emeralds. A good colour Tsavorite with great clarity will command a price however.

Clear/white - white sapphire can be very clear and sparkly but also quite expensive. Zircon (not to be confused with Cubic Zirconia) as already has been said can be clear. It can be very pretty and varies in price enormously.

There are tons more but hopefully this gives you a starting point!

Purrfectpear and Lovingdiamonds, thanks so much for the information. This gets me started on more research. Lovingdiamonds - thanks for the details!

Catmom - your new avatar shows my 2 absolute favorite rings from your collection! I was actually looking into a Parade setting but there are no jewelers out by me that carry that brand even though parade''s website gives me a list of 2. I believe I was looking into your actual sapphire setting since I wanted a rope twist design but I may have to go custom since no one carries Parade (that I can find). I had never heard of color changing sapphire before I found your post when looking for info on Parade, it looks gorgeous.

**CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW TO MOVE THIS THREAD TO COLORED GEM STONES?** I looked in the "Help" section but can''t find anything. Or if anyone can move it for me I would appreciate it.

(thanks for the idea, catmom)

If anyone has anything to add to Purrfectpear and Lovingdiamonds helpful responses, I would appreciate it.
