I'm sorry about your kitty DF! When I lived w/my parents out in the country we lost a lot of cats to people purposely running them over. One time we adopted a cat (we had a LOT of cats, couldn't bear the thought of someone not wanting their cat, so we always took them ourselves, strays too) that someone had left IN the house, over a weekend when they bug bombed. Somehow the cat didn't die, but he lost almost all his fur, just had patches of it left, and he had scabs all over him. They were just kinda like "Oh, well, I guess we'll just put him down, our mistake" and my mom freaked out when she heard about it and went and got the cat. I don't remember if she got it from the people, or if she went to the vets. Anyway, he lived in my dad's shop for a while and I was the only one he'd come out to see. I named him Oscar. I think he was part Persian b/c he had a smushy face like they do. He was long haired (before) and orange. He healed up enough that he would crawl up in my lap to be petted gently and he would follow me around close to the house, but in the end it was just too much for him and he just went to sleep and didn't wake up.
I don't understand how people can hurt animals. I just don't. Even if you don't particularly care for an animal, cat, dog whatever, what purpose does it serve to knowingly hurt it?
Packrat - That is just awful. Poor Oscar. I'd wonder if they were just ignorant of the consequences of leaving him in there? But that is still no excuse, and no excuse for JUST putting him down. At least he had a happy home with you for the remainder of his time here.
We do a lot of rescuing/adopting. I have my dog scout, who was a rescue and who was obviously abused. He's terrified of being picked up, and I"m almost positive that people used to throw him. We have a pitt bull we found tied to a cinder block with no food or water. SO's pitt bull that just passed was abused, and we believe shot at b/c she was terrified of guns. We had two cats we found in someone's car engine, after they had been driving. My horse was ridden in such an aggressive manner that he panics if you put a bit in his mouth. He rides great without one, just use a natural halter, but the minute you put a bit in you better hang on. I'm assuming they must have hurt his mouth a lot. SO's mom has a horse with one eye because a trainer hit his eye so hard it had to be removed.
SO and I recently took another in. She is probably 8mo old, and seems to be a terrier mix of some sort. SO was riding along a dirt road and these people just stopped and let her out. He said "hey your dog" and they said "not anymore". Bailey likes to ride on four wheelers, and loves to play

I just don't understand people who can do such malicious things to animals. They are defenseless. Especially animals that have been bred as domesticated animals. They love people. They don't really have a fight response to us, and if they do, we blame them. It just baffles me.
