Im interested in a 1.22 ct J colour Si1 Gia xxx

crown angle 33
pav angle 41
depth% 59.4
table% 60

HCA scores excellent 1.3

BUT is depth % being less than table % a bad thing? Even though its not by much!

thank you for any responses

This is a different flavour of MRB, known here as 60-60 type. Pictures to back up the HCA is recommended.

^ with the 1.3 HCA score, basically you're looking at a well-cut 60/60 diamond - https://www.pricescope.com/wiki/diamonds/60-60-proportioned-diamond - it will have a shorter crown and larger table as compared to the more typical Tolkowsky cut (https://www.pricescope.com/wiki/diamonds/tolkowsky-ideal-cut-diamond), and will face up bright with a bit more white light return and a bit less fire as compared to a Tolk.

eta: well-cut 60/60 diamonds are beautiful - personally I love them - but some people prefer a 60/60 just for pendants or would rather always go with a high crown/small table diamond - as chrono says, it is a different flavor.

33/41 has potential but may take a hit in contrast issues coupled with that depth.

What are contrast issues? I'm not an expert, and if something is super sparkly to me I would be happy. Would this be a beautiful diamond? I'd like for it to be set in a simple six prong solitaire.

Hi mmmdoan,

A pleasure to make your acquaintance. When diamonds suffer in contrast it is generally because it will be reflecting back too many dark reflections (ie. shadows) as opposed to bright white light to the eye.

Contrast in diamond takes into account the balance of bright and dark reflections back to the eyes of the observer and if there are too may dark reflections in relation to bright reflections that's when it'll take the hit.

The shallower crown/pavilion angle combos cause the diamond to function more similar to a mirror reflecting back head/body shadows as opposed to grabbing light from around the viewers head/body. This is primarily observed in diffuse or ambient light environments and observable even at a 10-15" distance from the eyes.

On a positive note diamonds with these shallower crown/pavilion combos can be very fiery when brought into spot lighting environments. If the price is right and you spend a majority of your time in dim or spot lighting environments you'll have a potential little fire ball on your hands (assuming all other gemological features are up to par) but in diffuse lighting it's possible it would take that hit. Hope that helps.

You can't buy a diamond just by numbers (well I guess you can, but it wouldn't be a good idea). There are plenty of vendors who provide pictures of the stone and some who provide idealscope images. I strongly suggest you limit your search to those vendors. I would not buy that particular diamond as you can do better. I would stick with 54-58 (or maybe 59 if you have to) for the table.

Look at Good Old Gold and WhiteFlash's in-house diamonds (which are very fine cuts) as they provide photos and idealscope images and more. Enchanted Diamonds has fewer in-house stones, but they do provide pictures for many stones and idealscope images on some. James Allen has good videos, but you can only request three idealscope images and they sometime take a couple of days.

A pleasure to serve. There is the possibility it may not too but without hard data it's hard to say exactly how it'll do but that is my experience with those combos. diamondseeker is right on with regards to how it's not always easy buying by numbers. Heck we've seen diamonds with seemingly perfect proportion combos (34.5/40.8) get AGS 2 in light performance. :wink2:

All the best,
Rhino
