I''ve seen a few diamond/ring and still am unsure what a perfect cut princess should look like. Looking straight down, if there are dark shapes, is that desirable? from what i understand it should be solid large "fire"? can someone describe what a perfect princess should look like?

Look at Whiteflash.com''s ACA princesses. Those are about as ideal as you''ll get!

Like my avatar! It's an ACA.

But seriously, well-cut princess actually have a lot of variation in how they look, for starters in the table. Some have small rounded tables, while others (like mine) have large-ish, square tables. Also, there is a visual difference between princesses with 2 or 3 chevrons in the pavillion. 2-chevron princesses will have broad, chunky flashes more like rounds. 3-chevron princesses have more of the small bits of pinfire. I prefer the pinfire in a princess, since it makes them look distinct from rounds. And some people like to see a strong X pattern in the middle, while others look for a "floral" type of pattern around the central X. I like that my stone has a good example of both (see the X and the "petals" from inside each part of the X?).

Take a look at some of the ideal cut princesses on Good Old Gold, for example. There is more variation in their stones than in WF's ACA line, but all of them are beautiful and many meet AGS's standards for ideal light performance.

You''re right jstarfire. Even amongst the ranks of AGS Ideal Princess Cuts there are quite a few varying flavors. Some of which I personally don''t care for and others that are just ablaze.

how do you tell the difference between these characteristics vs a bad cut?

I think I''m guessing i have only seen good to excellent cut diamonds that I am not even sure what a bad cut diamond look like!

Vendor expertise, your own taste, photos and ASET images and other cut technologies are all very helpful. It is fairly easy to know a bad cut when you see it.
