What do you think of this stone?

Hi everyone,

Let me introduce myself, seeing as I''ve been lurking for a while now!
I posted a couple of topics a while ago as my relationship was a bit unstable for a while after I moved in with my bf, but everything is great now and he has told me to expect a proposal before the end of the year!
So...I have been looking at settings and made a post over in show me the ring about a vatche setting I am interested in......but nobody replied

Anyway, I''ve found a jeweller here in Ireland who is going to make me an engagement ring...hopefully. I asked him about buying a diamond separately and giving it to him to put in whatever setting he makes for me.....he said that this would be fine but if it gets damaged during setting he isn''t responsible for it....it would be my problem!
(that is the standard response I''m getting from jewellers here in Ireland.....I know..I know....i should buy everything from the US and get it shipped over....but the VAT and customs they charge at this end is just ridiculous!)

So..he has offered me the following diamond:
GIA certified
0.87 round brilliant cut
H
VS2
Cut: Ex
Polish: V.Good
Summetry: V.Good
Faint fluorescence
6.15-6.20x3.75
Total Depth 60.7%
Table %: 56%

Crown angle and pavillion angle are not known by me at this time.
But, what is your feeling on this diamond??

Welcome!

My feeling is that this diamond could be promising, but we really need more info with the crown and pav angles and an Idealscope Image would not hurt either! If it is a recent GIA report then the info should be on it, can you check? It should be there as you mention an EX cut grade.

The stats provided seems okay so far but I really can''t tell without the crown and pavilion stats.

I''m a bit worried about the H colour though as I''m quite sensitive to anything over a G.
I''ll try and get a copy of the GIA cert from the jeweller and post it here.

You mentioned being colour sensitive to diamonds over G, but were they all ideal/excellent cut stones? Because this can make a difference.

Welcome, and sorry we missed your other thread! Show Me the Ring is generally where people post finished rings and Rocky Talky is where you post stones and rings during the decision process. I think you''d either have to see the diamond or know more about the angles to have any idea whether you''d want it or not. H color in ideal cut is a very pretty color but it is not icy white. It is just a personal preference issue. So far the table and depth look good. You just need the crown and pavilion angles.

Ok, so I asked the guy for the angles and he said ''what for'' and I said ''to plug into a cut adviser'' and he said ''Oh....the Holloway Cut Adviser...I wouldn''t rely much on anything that has to say. And he wouldn''t give me the angles!
Needless to say....I won''t be buying a diamond from this guy. I doesn''t inspire alot of confidence in his level of integrity, now does it!

As he would not give you the angles then you were right to run. You are the customer who wants to spend their hard earned money on a diamond, who is also entitled to any information about a particular diamond that the vendor has and can reasonably give you. Asking for the angles isn't an unreasonable request, especially as customers are in some instances becoming more educated, but as you are on the same side of the pond as me, I am not surprised. Cut quality is a virtually unknown area here, so you may have to insist on being given the info you want, especially as this diamond has a GIA ex cut grade and the #'s will be on the report anyway, wouldn't cost him anything!!

Rather unsual that the vendor will not give you the angles - I mean, it''s right there printed on the GIA cert!

Well, if he wants to withold information from you, it''s time to move on to another jeweller. Did he give his reasons doubting the HCA? I''d be interested to hear why.

Nope. He didn''t give a reason why he would doubt the HCA. I didn''t even mention that it was the HCA I was going to plug the numbers into, he just assumed.
Needless to say, I''m not doing business with him.

Actually, he lost out big time in the end due to his lack of co-operation!

While I was in Dublin on Saturday I purchased a diamond engagement ring!
It''s a .85 carat center stone, GIA certified with ex cut/polish/symmetry, round brilliant cut. Don''t have the cert or the ring yet as my bf (we''re not engaged yet..) is going to pick up the ring sometime when I''m not with him and surprise me with an engagement....so no hand shots yet! (the wait is killing me already) I should''ve asked the lady could we take a picture of the ring on my camera phone....just didn''t think of it at the time....doh!
It has diamonds in the shoulders also and is set quite high, in my opinion anyway. It''s probably not actually that high, but to me it is because I thought I''d go for something set much lower, but the high setting just suited my hand. I honestly love it and can''t wait to have it on my finger. I promise I''ll post pics over in Show me the Ring when I have it on my finger. Hopefully you won''t have too long to wait!
