I saw this ring in a antique store when I was in LA in October. I''ve been thinking of the ring ever since and was able to locate the dealer.

They still have the ring and I''m going to purchase. I want to make sure I''m not over paying

The ring is from the 1930s
Set in Platinum 8.5 grams
2.5 tcw
Marquis and baguette shaped diamonds

I''m getting the ring for $3K. Do you think that is a good price?

Thanks in advance for your comments

I think if you want to be sure you don''t overpay then you might need to make sure you have a good return policy and then take it to an independent appraiser before the return period expires.

That for the response. I will contact the jeweler and ask for a certification. The jeweler is extremely reputable and well known so I feel like they wouldn''t sell something that isn''t as stated. However thank you for reminding me about getting an appraisal.

I''ve been looking for an art deco ring and although this is not typical of the rings of that time I really couldn''t get it out of my mind. When I first saw it I was with a friend who was looking for an art deco ring to give her mother as a retirement gift, so I was not thinking of purchasing for myself. I kept thinking about the ring and couldn''t remember the name of the dealer. We had been to so many when we were in LA. After a hunt online I was lucky enough to stumble on to their website or at least what I thought was their website. I contacted them and asked if they had this ring since I didn''t remember the name of the shop. They still had it.

The good thing is they are coming up to SF to participant in an antique art show and will bring the ring with them next week.

I just wanted to get some expert advice since I sometimes by on impulse and have a week before I purchase

Anyone else want to give me their opinion?

I say if you can't get it out of your mind .. you should go for it!

This is a really unique ring and I don't think it will be easy to find unless you go the custom make route (which I suspect will be a fair bit more expensive). I personally don't think it will be easy to find matching marquise diamonds like the ones in this ring.

I also think you should get it to a reputable appraiser to check out the stats and get a non-inflated market evaluation.

I think getting it appraised is the best advice anyone can give you. A lot of the value is going to be determined by an up close examination of the diamonds, the setting, the workmanship etc.

I know in SF there is a PS recommended appraiser so if you and the ring are going to be up here it might be worth a call to her to see about having it looked at.

If you love it and haven''t been able to stop thinking about it, I think it''s worth an evalution by an appraiser.

Nothing of merit to add. The experts have answered it all.

I just wanted to say I thought the ring is amazing and I can fully appreciate why you can''t get it out of your head!!

I say "get it!!!"

Yes, ask the appraiser for its value on the secondary market, not new retail replacement, since it is a vintage piece.

I can''t help out on the pricing but I think it is a really unique ring and something you''d not find again easily

Is $3K the price the store started with or is it the discounted price? A generalization, but they all tend to discount epecially if it has been in stock for a while.

I think the ring is gorgeous. If you can''t stop thinking about it, you should buy it.

The appraisal for secondary sale is an excellent idea.

Thank you all for your comments. Does anyone know of the name of the appraiser in San Francisco?

I was in LA in October with a friend who was purchasing a ring for her Mom as a gift. Originally the ring was $4500 but when we were in LA they said they would lower the price. When I found the jeweler last week I reminded him about the lower price and he said he couldn''t believe he had quoted me that price but would honor it.

The Jeweler is Platt Jewelry on Robertson. I read that Tom Cruise purchased a ring for Katie Holmes from them.

Once I get the ring I will post pics of it on my finger.

On another note, tomorrow I''m going to the Legion of Honor to see the Cartier exhibit. I hear the exhibit is amazing

Thanks again for your feedback.

Thank you!
