Hello all, new to this and looking to get a nice engagement ring for my girlfriend. I found this stone over at jamesallen.com that looks good and seems to have a good price. I did read that they have their own grading scheme so I am a little concerned about that. Any comments on this stone would be really appreciated -- thanks!

It''s looks like a winner, but we would need the crown and pavillion angles from the GIA certificate to run through the HCA and confirm. No need to worry about the grading scheme, that stone comes with a GIA certificate which is a trusted lab. While not as strict as AGS on grading, you can get an idea of how ''ideal'' the cut is from the HCA adviser when you have those other stats.

BTW, it''s a fabulous colour and clarity combo and a great size. I think it will turn out to be a fabulous choice!!

Hi could you get the crown and pavillion angles from James Allen for this stone?

I would also ask for an Idealscope pic.

Okay, thanks for the info everyone. I did get the GIA certificate and the numbers are:

crown: 34.0 degrees
pavillion: 41.2 degrees

depth: 60.4 degrees
table: 57.0 degrees

culet: none

I plugged the numbers into the HCA and it gives it a 2.9 - "Very Good - worth buying if the price is right." I''m not an expert so does it look like a good deal? I haven''t been able to find a stone in this size/color/clarity at this sort of price. I''m keeping my fingers crossed - hope it''s a winner!

I would ask for an idealscope image, JA should be able to provide one if you ask. The HCA can penalize a diamond with a steep pavilion angle, so an IS image would be useful in this case.
