The diamond is on Union Diamond, they have a good return policy and their customers seem to like them.

It's an EGL Hong Kong Certification.

0.50ct
Round
Color : F
Clarity : VS2
Cut : Excellent
Polish: EX
Symmetry: EX
Flour: None
Girdle: M-SLTK

Table: 57%
Depth: 62.5%
Crown Height: 15%
Pavilion Height 43%

Price: $1250

I have been lurking for a while hear and reading up on this and on many other sites. Comparing prices on MANY other sites and in stores. This will be the first diamond I ever bought. A diamond with similar specs certified by GIA seems to be $2000+. But looks to be right inline with similar spec EGL diamonds. I don't trust the hearts and arrows but they don't seem to be affecting the price.

If I assume its a
Color: H
Clarity: SI1
Cut: VG
Polish: VG
Symmetry: VG
With a GIA Cert it would go for around $1500. In a store it would be more like 1800+.

And If I get it and determine its not really up to snuff I can return it.

Cert -

Thank You.

A gemologist told me (over the phone) that he personally doesn't like EGL because he has found that their color grading varies widely, where they say a H could be a G, H, I, J and he has even seen an H that he considered to be a K. He sells EGL and GIA and maybe he was full of it, but the stone WAS cheaper and that turned me off.

Who knows, though, in the world of diamond trading. Maybe get the stone and see if it speaks to you?

why assume??.. just buy a GIA graded stone.

Thanks for your replies.
I think what im going to do is drop the size to under a .5 somewhere in the .43-.47 range. Looking at those would give me some very very very nice stones in my price range.

Thank You.

I dont really know how I would feel about an I.
I've been looking at diamonds in stores and can easily pick up on an H off hand with noting to compare.

were you looking at stones graded by GIA or AGS as having H color?

Yes I was. At 3 different indi jewelers.

I've gotten away from .5 carat H color stones. After actually seenig a few I really dont think I will be happy with them. Anything with less color I'd have to sacrifice on the cut.

So I'm thinking if I drop the color to an F and go down .43-.45 carats I'm right at my price point. Right around 1300. It's going in a halo setting so I don't think the size diference will be a huge deal.
My girlfriend is the type of person who would be happy with any diamond in a nice setting. My pride should recover from purchasing a sligtly smaller stone that is higher quality. The price difference will leave me with more to spend on the setting which to her is the most important. The diamond is really just the cherry on top.

Thanks.

I like the way you are thinking about this in your last post. Much better plan. And the small difference in size will not be evident once haloed.

Thats pretty good I've actually been looking at both those stones. The G, from the grading report apears to have the inclusions in the pavilion, which can't be a bad thing.

It's also larger then my first pick -
And possiblily a better cut?

It's an F
This stone has a couple crystals along the edge I can see in the picture, which would probably get coverd up when set and a small feather in the crown.

I'm really leaning toward that G. Is there anything I should ask Brian Gavin before I make the purchase, other then maybe asking them to verify it is eye clean?

the G is a VS2...in that size and in a round I am sure it will be eye-clean. Where do you plan to get the setting?

I really want to take it to a Local store for the setting, mainly because I don't want to have to ship the diamond. I really want to see the stone on a setting, in my hand before I decide.

Of all the places we've looked at settings http://robbinsdiamonds.com/?gclid=CI_R5MzXzq4CFYMRNAodeDfU-Q had the largest selection in store, and very good prices.

The main reason through it was a great experience, they were very helpful. He did try and sell me a stone, but they just didn't have a large enough selection to really help me.

ok, I purchased this stone. It has feather on the edge of a pavilion in kind of a u shape. So thinking about it, I ask myself what exactly is a feather? So I look it up.. Now im a little worried. I plan on getting the stone insured before I have it set. So should I just hope noting happens and not worry about it or did I make a mistake?
