New to the board and appreciate all the information I have learned from reading. I have a quick question regarding 2 diamonds from GOG. Both are 2 carats and priced comparably. I just don''t understand the significant markup? Maybe I need to read more but it seems these 2 are priced pretty high. Let me know what you think. I also used the HCA on both and both have excellent ratings except they score good on the spread.

You pay a premium for an AGS Ideal vs. excellent or VG.

Well, there are a couple of things.

1. The biggest one is = the magic 2 carat mark.
There are price jumps at certain carat weights, namely, 0.5 c7, 0.75 ct, 1 ct, etc and the 2 ct mark is a very large jump.

2. Colour
Es and Fs are quite pricey, add to the fact that these are fairly large carat weights, the pricing for colourless D/E/F goes way up high.

3. Clarity
VS stones usually aren't expensive in smaller stones, but add #1 and #2 into the mix, and well...there you have it.

Of course, the cuts are top notch too but you already know that.

If you still want a large stone for less $$, the look for stones around 1.9 cts (will look like a 2 ct stone but without the pricetag), stay around G and H which is still quite white in those sizes and eye-clean SI1.

I''m assuming the OP is talking about the difference in price between other D/E VS2 stones of equal weights. The premium is cut.

I understand now. I did a pricescope search and saw how cheap the rest were. Here the new reason:

1. The rest are drop shippers
They have not seen the stone - these are from a virtual database, therefore their capital isn''t tied up in handselected inventory, so they are able to offer better pricing.

2. The biggest reason = cut
There are no information on the stone. Sometimes, I see just depth and table but not enough to tell me if they are duds or not, most my guess is that they aren''t going to be as beautiful as the GOG stones which have been individual hand selected AND proven sparklers with all the testing done.

Thanks for such a quick response....this board is pretty amazing with the amount of information it provides compared to the disinformation provided in the general community.

I understand the additional premium that GOG has over similar stones on the internet. So thanks for the help. Now, a separate question is are these diamonds worth it if i am in the market for an excellent quality diamond or should I keep looking. The HCA spread being only very good on both.

I think you''ll be hard pressed to find better stones if top quality is your goal. GOG will happily send you video of the stones.

Almost all well cut, well proportioned stones only get VG on spread. Only when the are really shallow do they get EX, so don't worry about that.

And I agree, you are looking at the best of the best with these. You won't find better.

Ellen and I both got ring stones there, and I think I can say for both of us that we are still extremely pleased! You can''t go wrong with getting the best quality (although I did get borderline G-H color instead of E-F!). Both of your choices are beautiful!

Indeed.

Can''t say you would be displeased with either. They both look like winners to me.
