I fixed your link.

I think that''s a gorgeous setting! I think there are more pics of it on this site....let me check...

Has your girl expressed this style as what she likes? Or anything?

She''s a bit mixed... she said she doesn''t like solitary rings but she saw one the other day and said that was nice... she likes channel sets or paved sets..

One thing shes definitive about is she likes 6 prong over 4 prong..

I''m assuming BN can make the ring into a 6 prong instead of the 4 prong that they sell? That isn''t a hard customization right?

from the picture you posted, it looks like a standard head, so it should be easily changed out. Its not all one piece cast, so it should be no problem.

In that case, I''d really try to get out again to stores with big selections. Have her try more on and see if she can narrow things down a bit. Channel vs. pave is a definite diifference, in how they look.

As for the prongs, I think they could probably do 6, since it can hold a variety of shapes. But best to ask them!

That''s great that you know how many prongs she prefers though, it''s very personal! (I am assuming this is for a round stone)

Just curious.. what is the difference between channel set and paved?...

I''ve seen them both but i cant tell lol... is it that one has small diamonds half way down while the other is all the way around?

Channel set is one which the melee stones are held by two strip of metal on the rings, in a channel.

Pave set is an arrangement of melee stones that provides the max number of stones to the neighbor, like trying to line up all coins flat on the table, usually held down by beads. If space allowed, a stone can have up to 6 neighbors.

I would say the ring style you choose is bead set rather than pave or channel.

diamonds all round the ring is known as full eternity ring, half way is half eternity ring.

The ring is pretty, but if your GF is mixed regarding taste, then you two should probably find a similar style ring to try on in person before ordering online. Often jewelry looks very different in real life.

Right. And usually a woman prefers one over the other, at least for the most part. However, some style rings lend themselves more to one or the other. So that''s why I think it''s best if she sees more rings. I think eventually you would have a much better idea. When first starting out, if a gal hasn''t done much looking, they are even sure themselves what they really like!

JA is a good vendor.

Hi guys,

I found another ring that looks similar to the original one I was looking at.. is it similar? http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/ring/item_412-1990_design.asp?pos=1&cid=412&module=setting&item=1990

Also, is James Allen a good vendor? Last time I compared prices JA was more expensive than BN, but now that I''m looking again it seems cheaper for the same quality rock.
I like this one a lot better than the first one!

Yes, James Allen is a good vendor, and their prices are very competitive. They also have a gemologist who will view the stones for you prior to purchase, so their service is better than BN, I think.

I, too, like the JA setting better than BN.

I, also, prefer the JA setting. It has more refined appearance IMO.

like the JA better that you last posted. Looks much more refined.

I like both of the rings that you posted... JA has a great reputation, so if it''s between the two, then JA might be your best bet. I do love how the sides are angled on the first setting, though.

Aren''t the sides angled in the 2nd one too?

Yes.

I personally prefer the JA ring, and it’s nice that JA gives you the option to get it in platinum, which is rarer and more durable than white gold. Do you know if your gf has a metal preference?

Hi,

I don''t think she has a preference.. I know theres probably a few discussions of platinum vs gold in the forums but which is more popular? I read that plat gets worn down, isnt as shiny, and hard to repair.. wg is easy to repair but turns yellow over time? Thats the basic argument right?

Hey,

As far as popularity goes, it's my understanding that platinum is generally considered the more popular of the two (among women, designers, celebrities, etc.). Gold isn't as durable as plat...you actually lose metal when you scratch gold, whereas you only displace metal when you scratch plat. Plat. does tend to scratch easier (maybe what you meant by plat. getting worn down?), but you can just polish those scratches out and that should restore its shine as well. Yeah, wg does yellow over time b/c it's not naturally white like platinum, and you'll need to get it re-plated in rhodium. Hope some of that helps. (I got most of my info from this site btw).
