What Do You Think About This Princess?

I have been doing quite a bit of shopping at a local jeweler that claims to offer the best diamonds at the best prices. The salesperson, a certified gemologist & former diamond grader for the GIA, has been extremely helpful. He has gone through a fair amount of his materials (lab manuals and pricing scales) with me displaying why diamonds are graded a certain way and what drives the prices. I think he has been honest with me and given me good advice when buying a diamond. However, I want your opinion on the diamond I am considering buying. Here are the stats on the diamond I have on hold.

0.87 carat
F color
VS2
Depth :76.5%
Table : 75%
Medium to Sligtly Thick Girdle
Polish : Excellent
Symmetry: Very Good
Price : $4002
Band : Undecided

I looked for similiar diamonds and found a couple for a $100 or $200 cheaper. I mentioned this to the salesperson and the way he justified it was that they will set the stone for free and then adjust the size for free after the proposal. Also, they will do a free rodium treatment prior to the wedding if I get white gold . Also, we can take the ring in for free cleanings for the life of the ring as often as we would like.

From what I have read on these boards many of you seem very knowledgeable. What do you all think? Am I getting a ok deal?

When you buy from an internet site seems like it would kind of be a hassle to do the resizing, rhodium treatment and cleaning

Diamonds need to be cleaned daily. At least every other day. Dirty diamonds don''t sparkle.

I guess I just didn''t like him using the free setting job and free cleaning (which any jeweler will do, not just the one you buy from) as warranting the 100/200.

I appreciate the feedback Julien. I had a feeling that was probably the case. The main thing that I am concerned about is whether or not the diamond seems to be a quality rock or not. Thanks again.

can you post the dimensions?

depth and table are pretty...useless in determining cut quality. it's GIA certed? so far, no red flags.

you've seen it, do you like it?

I have seen it and it looks good. However, I am far from being an expert. Measurements are below. He ran a sarin report for me but I left it at the store. I intended to bring it home but I forgot. I will pick it up tomorrow and the complete numbers. It is GIA certified.

see as many princess cuts as you can and go from there. you don''t have to be an expert to pick a great diamond, just find one that, in your eyes, looks better than the rest.

You can pricescope your stone to see what similar stones are going for in that carat weight, color and clarity. If you think it''s a beautiful, you have to trust your eyes. Buy the diamond, not the paper. Good luck!!

have you used the ''pricescope your diamond'' search tool at the top of the page? it can be helpful in comparing prices.

Nice ratios, I think. How does it compare with similar size princess cuts you saw? Did it sparkle? Were rainbows shooting from it? I''ve owned a few princess cuts; some were lively, others dead, even with good certs. You have to use your eyes. Go to another store and compare. Cleanings should always be free. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A GOOD RETURN POLICY. ALSO A GOOD TRADE UP POLICY (for a lifetime). My 2 cents. Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback julia. The return policy is 30 days full money back and the trade up is lifetime with a guaranteed 4% increase each year. Are these standard?
