Back from Italy, and totally IN LOVE with

a) truffles

and

b) Florence!

Less pleasantly, on the way home it looks like I picked up a case of the Dread Crud. (Hey, on the plus side, I did pick it up after Italy, so I will count my blessings.) So now my throat hurts so badly I can barely talk, and all my muscles and joints ache - but no sneezing or coughing, and only a little fever, like between 99 and 99.5.

I''m taking Dayquil and Chloroseptic on the basic principle that they can''t hurt, but the only thing that''s actually helping as far as I can tell is the constant ingestion of Riccola cough drops, and, sadly, little miracles that they are, they don''t do much for aches.

So, PS, tips? What''s your favorite remedy for this sort of thing?

I''m sorry you aren''t feeling well, Circe! Here''s what I would do:

1) Advil. Love the stuff--makes pretty much any pain feel at least a little better.
2) Lots of hot drinks or iced drinks. Fluids are excellent since being hydrated always feels better than being dehydrated, and I find that hot or very cold drinks seem to soothe my throat. Sometimes I have my DH bring me Starbucks caramel apple cider, but I''m sure tea with honey would be similarly soothing.
3) Rest your voice.
4) If you''re coughing, consider going to the doctor to get some prescription-strength cough medicine. Less irritation = less pain in throat.
5) Just plain rest.

I take lots of Ibuprofen and then relax. . .maybe sip on slightly warmed up tea. Avoid products with sugar as those can aggrevate a sore throat.

Hope you feel better soon!

Water
Rest
Soothing things like my favorite tea, movie, and book

I don''t take medication

I hope you feel better soon, Circe. And if you haven''t started a thread on your trip I imagine there would be a lot of interest in one!

Thanks, guys!

Okay, so ... hydration, check. I''m eating popsicles like it''s my job in alteration with the Riccola to sooth the throat. I haven''t even talked to my best friend to update her on how the trip went (blasphemy, I know!) because talking hurts too much, so resting the voice, check. I''m on deadline, so I feel like a huge lazybones, but sitting up for more than half an hour makes my hips and knees ache like wildfire, so rest and relaxation ... reluctant check, and tomorrow, I run out for some Advil/ibuprofen (weirdly, we appear to be completely out of the latter - I wonder if the husband hid it somewhere?). And, as for the soothing book or movie - BIG check! I finished _Drood_ (dreadful and verging on completely repetitive of Simmons'' early works) and _Committed_ (decent, but nowhere near as good as E,P,L). So I am down with the list!

Haven,

! I can''t decide if I want to post a big funny thread tonight/tomorrow to take my mind off it all, or if I should wait for the husband to return with the camera - he''s in Europe through the weekend with all our tourist photos!

The only medication I take for aches/pains is ibuprofen. I turn down anything prescription strength when it is offered to me.

I would suggest just staying hydrated, eating mild foods and plenty of fruits/veggies plus taking otc ibuprofen or acetominophen (sp?). Sorry you''re not feeling great, hope you''re back to normal ASAP!

Eep. I would recommend NOT eating very cold foods. It soothes the throat temporarily but makes it hurt more when the feeling wears off. Instead, I would go for hot/warm drinks like lemon/honey, tea, or chicken broth. I''ve had a lot of experience with throat issues. They''re the worst.

Definitely go for the ibuprofen/advil too. See the doc soon if the pain persists. Mine almost always mutates into some kind of infection or other. Take care. Fluids fluids fluids.
