What do you put in your ultrasonic...besides jewelry?

Recently I got an ultrasonic and I have to tell you, I am in love. My jewelry has never looked better!

The manual says you can put eyeglasses and dentures (don’t have any of those, thankfully) in to be cleaned as well as jewelry. A couple of days ago I cleaned my makeup brushes the way I always do, using running warm water and dawn dish soap. Then I remembered the ultrasonic and thought, heck, why not, and tossed them in.

Y’all. Omg. I thought these were CLEAN makeup brushes. The amount of stuff that came out of them in the ultrasonic was utterly disgusting. If you haven’t tried this yet, DO IT.

Anyway, this makes me wonder, what else should I be tossing into this incredible device? What do you use it to clean besides jewelry?

How did you wash your makeup brushes in there? Are they woodhandled...?

A metal watch band is a good candidate. Mine collects lots of grossness between the links, but I haven’t been brave enough to detach it to put in the ultrasonic.

Oh and if you or husband have a hobby that involves metal parts, those would be good to put in.

I held them so the brush ends were in the water and left the lid open. Used dawn dish soap in the water and just twirled them around a bit while it ran. One was a MAC foundation brush that wouldn’t have fit in there entirely and I’m not sure what the handle is made of. The other was a retractable Sephora brush that I use for mineral makeup. It has a metal handle. I would not have wanted water to get in the upper parts of it. But holding them there, while boring, worked just fine!

Watch links would be interesting...but I don’t think I would want to detach from my watch casings regularly to do that, or that I even know how! For those, I use my old jewelry method—a dedicated toothbrush head on my Sonicare!

I’m totally going to try that. I hate cleaning makeup brushes, so if this works with my ultrasonic (I have a dinky one), I’ll be thrilled!

Ha, that exactly what I use for my watch band. Only problem is people keep throwing away the old heads I’ve set aside for jewelry cleaning!

The way I solved that problem with my old toothbrush head was to write “jewelry” on it with a sharpie. Now it stays where I put it!

I put my entire watch in the ultrasonic. It looks great after. It’s obviously a waterproof watch (!) and I wouldn’t do it more than a couple of times a year, but it cleans between the metal joints like nothing else!

@lissyflo -You’re braver than I am! My jeweler keeps telling me mine is waterproof, but I’m too chicken.

@Tonks, I know this was your thread asking others for tips, but I want to know more of yours lol! I just ran to dig my ultrasonic out and my make up brushes are now CLEAN. And I’m going to label my old toothbrush heads.:appl: What else ya got?

Now I’m thinking about unscrewing my sunglasses, running the screws and metal legs in the ultrasonic, and putting them back together. Mentally going through all the items in my house to see if I can take them apart and put them back together...

Love that it works so well! Watch links can get utterly gross.

What kind of watch is it? I thought about it with my Rolex since it has a screw down crown, but it still makes me nervous...

@blingbunny10 haha! Glad it worked on the makeup brushes! Isn’t it amazing?!?

The only other thing I have tried was my night guard. I wear one because I clench my teeth. It got it absolutely sparkling clean. I should probably do my kids’ retainers.

You know...thinking of watches...I was just realizing that we could probably do those the same way I did the makeup brushes to clean them without submerging the cases. Hold the watch face above the water and let the links dangle in!!!

Totally trying this later today.

It’s an old Seiko. I’m not sure I’d be brave enough to try it with a Rolex! But it’s soooo satisfying how clean it gets the joints, especially after summer when I’ve been wearing suntan lotion.

My US came with a little plastic stand so you can put your watch bracelet in without the face touching the water....I never tried it before the thing went kaput though. I did clean sunglasses in there and that worked great!

Super cool! Do you still have the stand? I’d love to see a photo if you do.

i returned the machine & no longer have the stand but it looked like the one below, a little plastic bridge.

So cool! I wish mine had come with one of those!

I put my Rolex in mine. It is a stainless steel with diamonds inside the watch face. I place it with a special cleaning solution made just for an US. I do every week and not a problem!

it's odd i looked and can't find them sold alone...seems like a business opportunity for someone!

I put my old Raymond Weil watch in it..I’ve had it for more than fifteen years..It has diamonds under the crystal..I figure if I kill it I still have the Gucci watch my husband bought me that I don’t wear. :rolleyes2: It came out soooo clean and shiny!
