Hi all! I was thinking about a custom setting, but I''m nerveous about ordering it because the quality is not guaranteed. I had a thread about it, and still not sure...

Here''s the setting I''m considerring: http://www.jamesallen.com/products/item_57-173.asp

What if it looks too simple? I wanted to get something unique... The stone I''ll get is 1.62 (approx 7.7 diameter). The custom would be a little cheaper, but in white gold where I can get platinum here.

Your thoughts? Thanks!

I should add that I''m more drawn to contemporary, clean settings. I like this one because it has a surprise diamond, and this is one of the features of my custom design.

That James Allen setting is nice and simple, and would definitely let your stone be in the spotlight

For a clean, unique, and contemporary look, I happen to like this tension setting: click here

Whatever setting you put your stone in, I'm sure it's going to look gorgeous though

If you don't mind me asking, what's your budget?

This is a really nice setting! It''s not exactly what I had in mind, but worth considering. Thanks!

My budget for a setting is really loose. I''d like to stay within $2k. I would definitely consider spending more if I LOVED the setting.

That''s a lot of surface area to show scratches if you do platinum. Ellen has the Vatche x-prong in wg, and it always looks great in her close-up photos! My jeweler said he likes platinum when engraved and with pave or for thinner bands, but it shows a lot of scratches when wider and plain. I do have a new thin platinum band and I love it, but I''m not sure what I''d do if I went with a 3.5mm setting. I think that setting is very pretty!

Hmm...can they send you a real pic? I''m not crazy about those computer generated pictures on JA''s website.

Do *you* love it? Does it make you feel excited? If not, I''d keep looking! $1500 is a decent amount of $ for a setting-it should speak to you!

Thank you guys! I think I found a setting that "speaks" to me.

And it''s 90% like the one I designed!!! I had different prongs in mind, and the surprise would be set in rose gold.
It''s A. Jaffe 17II1 (http://store.pearlmansjewelers.com/jewelry/view/2776/1013/) from Pearlmans. Now I just need to figure out how to get my JA diamond set in it (haven''t bought it yet, but only waiting for them to re-open next Monday to confirm it is eye clean and get IS). I wonder if I could buy the setting from Pearmans and send it to JA for them to set it? Would Pearlmans cover my diamond if I have them set it?

I bever bought on-line before, and it makes me a little nerveous...

Should I stick with the custom design? It''s a combination of two different rings, and I basically saw it in person and I loved it.

I would definitely go for the A. Jaffe if it''s close enough to the setting you had in your head! I think it''s always easier to buy a ready made setting rather than go custom if you can find a ready made setting that you love! I believe I''ve read here on PS that Pearlman''s will cover the stone while setting it, but I would check with them to make sure, of course. You could also see if they can custom order from A. Jaffe and see if you can get the surprise diamond set in rose gold. Some big name companies will customize. You could also check on the prongs, too, depending on how different they are.

You can either have JA send the diamond straight to Pearlman''s, or you can have them send the diamond to you and then you can send it to Pearlman''s. If you send it to Pearlman''s yourself, the best way to ship diamonds is through USPS registered mail. You can insure for up to $25,000. It''s a bit slow, but I''ve read here on PS that it''s actually the only way to have full insurance coverage unless you are a jeweler with a company FedEx account. UPS and maybe FedEx both have disclaimers on their website that they don''t cover jewelry.

This is very helpful, thank you! I will definitely call P''s tomorrow and ask them. If they cover the stone while setting it, all my "problems" are solved! This way I get to look at the stone to make sure it is in fact perfect, and I get the setting I love. How very cool! This just gets more and more exciting!

Great choice! I think you''ll be happier in the long run with a designer setting! Custom always is a little risky unless you are going with an existing design by the same person.

I like both the settings you posted, but if the A Jaffe is closer to what you had imagined then that is what I would get.

both settings look fantastic. i have done custom settings and i have to say sometimes they don''t turn out like you expected....
