This ring is aquamarine with smaller diamonds on the sides with a gold setting. I am looking for opinions on it from everyone :).

Very pretty blue!!!

It is a very pretty color, but the cut of the stone looks a little off to me.

If you would like detailed feedback on the stone, I think you'd be better off posting in the Colored Stones forum. Just click on the "report concern" button and the mods can move it for you.

Just want to let you know that your manicure is divine.... and the ring too!

Thank you so much everyone. Junebug, can you explain why you think the cut has been poorly done? I am new to all of this and I do not know a lot about jewelry yet I am still learning. This jewel is an heirloom.

Looks more like blue topaz. Aquamarine should look blue/green? Very pretty tho!

I have asked that to my Grandmother who purchased it in business and I have seen that it is indeed an Aquamarine stone and it is also insured as one.

I am going to bring it with my aunt to a trusted jeweler to ask again. Maybe you guys are right. It is unfortunate since it was believed to be aquamarine this whole time. Are there any at home tests I can try in the mean time?

No, don't try any home tests! There are blue aquamarines so there is no way to tell from a picture. You are very fortunate to have an heirloom ring!

Is blue topaz one color or can it be varied?

You should really post this in the colored stone forum. The experts over there can probably tell you more.
Its a pretty color and looks like a fun ring to wear.

Wonderful heirloom ring. It is lovely...lucky you. The color does look like a blue topaz. I've never seen an aquamarine that deep blue. It looks like it has a window under the table (leakage) but it is surprising how many colored stones are windowed.

What a beautiful ring and fun to wear.

CheshireCat, I assumed you were considering purchasing the stone, and that is why I offered my thoughts on the cut - The faceting seems a little unusual to me and it looks like it might have a window (an area on the table that you can see through to your finger.) Knowing now that it's a family heirloom, what kind of information do you want about the stone, and why? Just curiosity, or are you interested in selling it etc. It might be worth it to just wear it and enjoy it and not really worry about the specifics!

Finding out what the stone is would involve sending it to a lab for testing. You mentioned having it insured, so I'm assuming it was appraised so maybe that is enough verification it is an aquamarine, I don't know. There are blue aquamarines, I've seen several of them similar in color to yours here on PS.

I am far from an expert, and that is why I suggested moving this to Colored Stones - the knowledgable folks over there can give you much more info than I can.

Hi Cheshire, I'm no expert either, but I do happen to have an aquamarine and have read a little about them. That seems a little on the bright blue side. Did you google other pictures? You will probably be able to confirm it if you are getting it appraised for insurance purposes.

This is a Tiffany soleste, and I have read that the aquamarines are more clear, like water blue, not as saturated as the color of your stone. I can literally see right through my stone. Maybe it is just the picture. I bet those colored stone experts would know a lot. Good luck!

regardless of what type of stone it is, it is beautiful!!! gotta love it!! 8)

+1 for moving this to the CS forum.

Here are my honest thoughts on it...I hope you take them as a grain of salt as all that matters is how special it is as a family hierloom piece to you!!!! :appl:

- I really doubt it is an Aqua from the pictures you showed. It looks like Blue Topaz. Blue Topaz is heavily treated, basically nuked so you can get large sizes for a fairly decent price. While Aqua can range in color (I believe someone posted some links to some other aquas for sale) from the pictures you sent I would definitely stake my money on topaz.
- There is definitely a window looking down. When you tilt the ring is there also a tilt window similar? I doubt it with a pear but wanted to ask anyhow.

Overall I think it is a pretty ring, I personally wouldn't bother to insure it as you will probably spend more insuring it over a few years then what it is actually worth. That is just my .02 cents though. I would definitely take it to a jewelry and get their thoughts. However make sure the jewelry has some knowledge of colored stones.

There was another topic on here somewhere where someone thought they had an heirloom piece that was a large yellow sapphire but ended up being a citrine. it was a really interesting thread as her family swore up and down it was a sapphire as that is what they were always told.
