My friend is planning to propose and is considering this diamond:
  • 1.20 carat
  • Color: D
  • Clarity: IF (Internally Flawless)
  • Cut: Ideal, Excellent
  • No Fluorescence
  • Table: 60%
  • Depth: 62.6%

Price: $11,000

On paper it looks excellent, but we’d like expert confirmation. At this price and spec, is it genuinely a good deal, or are there any hidden trade-offs (proportions, performance, market pricing) that we should be aware of before purchasing?

Fancy shapes like ovals can't be judged by the report. Things like dark bowties and light leakage can happen at any ratio, color, or clarity. I found the diamond you're considering and it doesn't look great to me, but @tyty333 knows a lot more about ovals than I do: https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/oval-cut/1.20-carat-d-color-if-clarity-sku-24888078

There's very little reason to go with IF clarity, almost all VS2 ovals in this size range are flawless to the naked eye. I would open the search up to D-F, VS1-VS2 ovals to get something with better sparkle.

This is a very different look, but there is a 1.52 carat F color Brian Gavin signature oval at this price point: https://www.briangavindiamonds.com/...roducts/1-52-f-si1-brian-gavin-signature-oval

For all ovals you should be considering face-up dimensions in addition to carat weight. Here's a website where you can compare the sizes of two diamonds side-by-side: https://www.diamdb.com/

I agree with @newtojewels that the stone doesn't look great to me and that unless there are cultural reasons for needing a D, IF, the search should be expanded to include at least E and F colors and Vs 1-Vs2. I'd even say go to a G color for a well cut stone, assuming the wearer isn't extremely color sensitive.
