Today I was visiting one of my local jewelrs and I came across what looked, at first blush, like a big emerald cut stone. But upon closer inspection it was really several stones that fit together PERFECTLY to make up the look of one big stone. I have seen it done with asschers and certain halos, but never *this* perfectly (not a prong anywhere to be found; the stones all fit against each other with a bezel around the whole thing). The jeweler referred to it as an "assembled" stone but I can't find anything like it on the net. Help me! This might just solve my lastest itch for an emerald cut while not breaking the bank!

ETA: I'm thinking some of these (or at least something similar) might have shown up on a thread about Gypsy's ring, but I can't find it now...

Are you talking about illusion settings/stones?

Um... maybe (?). Not like where they take a ton of tiny square stones and make a fake big princess (which is what I think of with the term "illusion," but maybe I'm being too narrow in my thinking), but where they start with a small emerald cut and add baguettes and traps to come up with a bigger emerald cut. I guess, now that I've typed that out, that the concepts are the same, so perhaps that is what's it's called.

(LOL, I'm sure my descriptions are SO NOT helpful!)

Lol. It does sound like the same concept certainly, but a posher version of the crappy kay''s jewelers illusion settings! I can''t think of a better term for it...

I saw a ring like that last weekend. It looked like a massive ascher with clipped corners. When I asked about it - thinking it was some new cut I''d never seen -- & I was told it was actually a bunch of stones put together seamlessly to create that look. I stared and stared at it & you could not tell it wasn''t just one stone. I have no idea how much it was but I''m betting it wasn''t cheap.

I think they''re called invisible set.

I have a pair of earrings like that. It''s four small princess cuts that fit together in to a .5ct size. The cert doesn''t call it anything special, just lists the stone weights and number of them. I suck at camera work so I don''t have a picture to show you.

I was just browsing Sasha Primak and saw this: I think this is similar to what you are describing? The URL is www.primak.com and it''s under the ''Boutique'' line.

Wow, I wouldn''t have thought that idea as appealing, but that looks really good! I wonder how the diamonds are held in?

They have a killer Legacy-like sapphire and diamond ring, too!

Don''t rings like this carry significant chipping risk?

That ring is really lovely though...

I''ve seen these types of rings a lot at places like zales and kay and even some of the middle stores. I also saw one that really was a "perfect" emerald made of 9 of them, it was well done. Usually they''re made from princess stones though and have very very large tables, but not 100%. Some can be fairly deceiving, but in the end it''s a cluster ring.

i recently saw this company, alito, makes ''one'' diamond out of several. i kind of wrote it off, but happened to be in a store that carried them and the look is pretty impressive. looking from the side with some glare you can see the individual tables, but from the top i had no idea it wasn''t one diamond. they seem to only do rounds based on their site http://www.alitocollection.com/Diamond_Jewelry/Firenze/ but it might give you some information.

Hi DeeJay,

I think that you are referring to the illusion setting. Van Cleef and Arpels has pieces of jewelry with this setting. I heard from jeweler that the problem with these type of setting is that if there is a problem with one stone, to fix the problem, the entire row of stones has to be taken out.

Hey DeeJay! Icestore.com has a setting like this with an asscher in the center-- the asscher in this one is prong set though... and what you are referring to wouldn't have prongs all illusion set. You are right... I'm sure I linked it or copied into a thread at somepoint. It's a very unique look.

Expensive though. All those baguettes have to be custom cut and fitted!

When done well these settings are really pretty and give the appearance of a larger stone. However, often when they are not done well they look a little 80''s and it''s pretty noticeable that it''s multiple stones. Personally I rather have one small stone instead of several stones put together, but my friend has an illusion setting and loves it. It''s quite pretty and looks *a lot* more expensive than it was.

Thanks all for the pics and links and opinions. I''m not 100% sold on the idea, but I was just so surprised by how good it looked! When Mrs. S. visits me next month I''m going to take her to the jeweler and get her opinion in person.

I think the thing that also appealed to me was that the entire package was really well done; perfect pave, nice designs, the whole banana. We''ll see..
