The dealer that I''ve been going to showed me a diamond already set in a hand-made ring today. It was exactly the setting I''ve been looking for, with two pear-shaped side stones. Here is the GIA report on the center stone:

Round brilliant
7.43-7.48-4.61MM
1.57 Carats
Depth: 61.8%
Table: 59%
Girdle: Thin to Medium, faceted
Culet: Small
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Clarity: SI2
Color: E
Fluorescence: None

I examined the stone under a 10x loupe and could see three inclusions, but could not see any inclusions unaided. He had been showing me H and I colored stones the last few weeks, but when I saw the E I knew that was what I wanted. Let me know what you all think.

Another big advantage for me is that it is already set, so that I can pop the question before Christmas.

The price for the center stone was $10,900. The price for the entire ring (setting plus sidestones) is $13,590. Is this fair?

Thanks!

Bic, the stone's price seems in line for a B&M. Maybe you could get that stone for about $500-$750 less on the Internet. Can't say for the setting, since you didn't mention how big the pears are or what quality. However, I will say that if the pears are at least .25ct each, and the ring is well-made platinum, the price is still okay for a B&M.

Hi Bic...the price is pretty good...if the stone is eyeclean, great.

Is cut a priority at all? If so, I would suggest to get the crown and pavilion angles from the jeweler if psosible, because the stone could be well cut and therefore a great deal, or non-well-cut in which case your great deal evaporates.

Good luck! I think you may need more info to tell for sure, if the stone is already set, hopefully a Sarin was done beforehand. Personally I would never buy a pre-set ring for that kind of money, who really knows what you are getting. IMO a vendor could pre-set a stone he'd have a problem selling loose.

Good luck!
