Hi all

Firstly let me apologise for asking what i think is a really dumb question but.............. I am hoping somebody could shed some light on what the specs on a diamond actually mean and what you are looking for in a good quality diamond. I understand about the "4 C''s" but its the other bits that I''m struggling with, such as table, depth, pavillion, girdle etc. I have tried searching but I just ended up getting really confused

Any help would be gratefully appreciated so my BF can make an informed descion.

Thanks

I''m in the same boat. I understand the 4C''s but the other aspects you mentioned, I guess I don''t understand how that affects the overall look of the diamond. I know if it''s cut too deep or too shallow it doesn''t reflect light well, but that isn''t a very technical description...

Move your mouse to the top of the screen where it says "knowledge." The drop down options that you see will tell you everything you want to know (more than that, probably).

Wow - that was quick!

Thanks for your responses. Capt Aubrey - thanks for the heads up, i was just looking in the wrong place!

My advice is to read that knowledge section slowly and absorb it all in. There is a LOT of useful information, so think of it as studying for an exam.

Hi Chizzy!

I found that when I was starting out, that this picture really helped me to figure out where all the pieces fit and to keep all the numbers straight.

I hope that, in addition to, all the info in the PS Knowledge section, that this helps.

Hi Sparkalicious

and thank you - that picure really is useful, it gives a good reference point to keep going back to.

Gastro - You are so right! It really is like revising for exams ( something i hated!), but there is loads of useful info. Think I''m going to have to go over it several times before it all starts to sink in!

Hi Chizzy,

Spark posted a diagram of a Tolkowsky Ideal Cut, which if you click the link, will explain more. Specifically, that there is a wide range of proportions that will work. I just didn't want you trying to hold fast to that certain set of numbers.

Also, most of us tend to look for 54-58 ish tables.
