I have a ring I had appraised for insurance. The centre stone is a 0.16 marquise and there are 6 other marquise in the ring. I know these are small stones but this question is more for education than anything else.

The centre stone has reflective graining which can easily be seen with a loupe, the surface on the girdle and on the upper girdle facet where this reflecting graining ends due to it being the edge of the stone has like a nick/fissure. When I look at the stone from the top it is like there is a small v shape which has no diamond. It seems that the diamond has been cut like this due to the graining leaving this natural nick/fissure/cavity, I don''t know.

This stone the appraiser said was an SI1 to SI2 grade (remember the stone was set). I asked if she saw this nick and she said yes but as it is external it is not taken into account when assigning a clarity grade for value of the ring. Well I don''t know about external as it leaves a V shape out of the side of the stone outline.

Anyway can anyone guess what this inclusion or blemish?? would be called? It it just graining or nick or fissure or feather or what? It just really looks like there is a bit missing caused by the graining inclusion and the diamond at each side not fitting adjacently. The grain seems to lie at a say 70 degree angle to the 90 degree angle of the adjacent pieces of diamond.

mmm, I looked at the stone today and when holding the stone properly in front of a loupe the v-shape does not show as much, only when the stone is tilted, so I see what the appraiser meant that it would not affect the clarity of a SI diamond.

Still don't know what the inclusion type would be called though, does anyone?

pyramid,

what you are describing seems to be a cavity, probably a small one(?).

to my knowledge, cavities are regarded as inclusions and graded in clarity.

Maybe what you call graining could be caused by a twinning plane? and the "V" would be a "natural" (or a chip). No idea if these afect grading when external, but I guess this is explained on GOG's site on his display of inclusions (and elsewhere).

Hi pyramid,

I suspect that you are talking about a "natural" or an "indented natural". You may want to do a search on these and see if the descriptions match what you are seeing. I did think that "naturals" affect the grading though, but I am not sure.

Thank you all for your replies.

I know I will not find out what type it of inclusion it actually is unless I get someone to look at it and as the stone is so small I will not go into the jeweler with just this unless I am going in about something else as well.

Anymore experts have opinions on it?
