what crib mattress did you choose?

I thought some family members were going to buy our crib mattress, but they ended up buying other very generous gifts so now I think we will need to buy the mattress ourselves.

The one we registered for is the Naturepedic Organic Classic 252 http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3256551.

I like the fact that it has good reviews and has a firmer and softer side (infant vs. toddler). The fact that it is organic also appeals to me, as friends who purchased non-organic mattresses told me they let their mattresses air out a long time to get rid of the smell. Reviews of the above mattress said there was no smell when they opened it.

However, with all the other expenses that we have coming up, I'm wondering if there isn't another option that doesn't have quite as hefty a price tag. What mattress did you choose?

I have no clue....haha.

We went to Babies R Us.....They had three or four mattresses there....We picked one that was midpriced and felt firmish.

No clue what brand or anything.

Turtle we got that mattress or maybe it was the 150. Not sure, but it was the Naturepedic Organic one and it had 2 sides. We love it actually. And J seems to like it, he sleeps through the night. I also got the waterproof organic mattress pad ($59) for it.

After reading about a few studies done I believe in AU, that think that crib mattress toxins could be contributors to SIDS or infant death...this is one of the only 'wrapped' mattresses sold in the US that fits all their requirements. Alternatively you could get a regular mattress and have it wrapped or purchase a wrap for it.

I figured for $250 it was worth it since the kid would have it for years since it's a toddler bed mattress too.

We have the Simmons Beautyrest Advanced.

We originally registered for the Naturepedic, but it was discontinued in my area, so we went with this instead. It has the dual sides as well, and we also covered it with a mattress pad.

Mara - what do you mean by "wrapped" mattress? We got two Better Basics mattresses from Giggle http://www.giggle.com/p/27418/Organ...aspx?s=1&keyword=Organic+Cotton+Crib+Mattress and two waterproof crib mattress pads.

We did the same. I think ours was a Sealy and was around $100 at BRU. We paid $80 with a 20% coupon.

OK, thanks! I never heard of this. I just checked and our mattress have a100% polyethylene food-grade waterproof surface (No vinyl/PVC, phthalates, or antimicrobial biocides). Also, they have U.S. grown and certified organic cotton filling (No polyurethane foam or latex).

yeah i think that NZ study recommends wrapping with the food grade poly...which is the same that Naturepedic has, and if you buy one of those 'Babe Safe' wrappers it's the food grade poly as well i think.

We bought the Naturepedic organic crib mattress. It has the food-grade polyethylene cover instead of vinyl, and no fire retardants or chemicals. I am not a 'crunchy' mom at all, but that was the one thing I for sure wanted to purchase organic. Babies/toddlers spend a LOT of time sleeping!
