Been on PS awhile now and seen many variations on this.

What comes first? Do you focus on the stone, shop it and find dream stone, then find a setting to compliment it? or do you find a dream setting and find a stone that will fit?

I never even considered finding a setting first, although I thought I had a fairly clear vision of what kind of setting I wanted (very similar to the Harry Winston halos). Maybe that''s why I ended up with a ring that looks unlike the one I thought I''d get!

I always thought I''d have a cushion, asscher or emerald cut set in a micropave halo... I ended up with a six prong solitaire set in a cathedral setting precisely because I chose the stone first, rather than the setting.

Given the inventory during the time I was searching, it happened that the stone which best fit our desired balance of quality, price, and size was a RB. So I went with the RB (hard to be unhappy with such a basic shape!). My personal reference is not for haloed RBs so I just opted for a simple six-prong cathedral setting.

I live vicariously through you gals now!

I''m with you Gleam although I had many visions, Harry Winston inspired included, my first priority was the stone.

The stone was the major piece, after that, I knew everything else would fall in place and I could work with it.

The setting came LONG before the stone. I wasn''t even sure what shape diamond I wanted.

Diamond came before the stone, but I think its totally individual, and everyone makes their own personal call - for some, its more about the stone, and for others, its more about setting.

My entire focus and budget was the stone. Because of this, after all these years, I still love my stone, however my setting isn''t me *at all*. . .I''d like to switch my stone out and my husband and I have discussed it. . .sometime that''ll happen. . .we just have SO many other things going on in our lives that my setting upgrade is very low on our list for the foreseeable future.

It depends on the person and the project I think. For me, it varies

Now, thinking back on it, mine have been the stones for all projects!

I picked out a diamond first then the ring. Of course if you find a ring you love then you get it first.

I got the stone first!

Stone!

For my e-ring, the setting came WAY before the stone... we saw it at a local jeweller, fell in love, and knew it was the one!

for me it has always been the stone. setting is 2ndary: its only a medium of display for the stone.

+1

And it pains me to spend money on metal instead of stone (excepting a few artists, in which case the setting is out of my budget).

The stone! I prefer finding a stone with the right personality, and letting it speak to me until I find just the right setting.
