I didn''t know where to post this, kind of a random question! I have a large cushion cut solitaire, purchased from a estate jeweler. The diamond is warm, the original paperwork that came with ring stated it was I color. We then had it independently appraised and the jeweler stated it was more of J than I, a little disappointing but we got the ring at a amazing price and I love it, so we decided to deal. Fast forward to a month later and another jeweler who had resized the ring said it was nearly an H. I understand these colors are within in 1-2 grades of each other and interpretation can vary depending on color sensitivity but I honestly can''t tell either so maybe fellow PSers can help! Sometimes I think it looks faint yellow and other times, it looks icy white. It does have a strong blue fluor and a great cut so that may have something to do with it.

Photos (with/without flash): white at every angle
Jewelry store: icy white at every angle
Grocery store: white with a little bit of beige at edges, every angle
Indoors, white walls, indirect lighting: beige white
Outdoors, bright direct light: white with strong flashes of blue, every angle
Outdoors, overcast: Light yellow, every angle

What really bothers me is how the stone looks outdoors, in overcast weather (which where I live, in upstate NY is the norm)
... it looks pretty yellow from all angles. I wonder if it''s a J, or even a K with a great cut and fluor which bumps up the color grade appearance in direct lighting. I would post pics but they always show up white. What do you think. I love it regardless but would like everyone''s input :)

well, your descriptions are the way you see them. We all see colours differently - your light yellow might be my visibly yellow or my ivory - perhaps even my what-are-you-talking-about-that''s-CLEAR. Even if you had posted photos, they wouldn''t tell us anything.

trust your independent appraisal - that''s why you got it done, right?

Remove it from the setting and send it to GIA or AGS to be graded.

Anything else is less definitive, especially if the diamond was not still in the setting when it was evaluated.

As long as you love it I don''t think the color matters. I''d love to see it too.

I''d say it''s most likely what the paperwork it came with states. Diamonds pick up the colors in surrounding areas so I don''t believe a naked eye can really tell it''s true color grading. Appraisals to me, are just opinions(different people can have different views on the matter), you should just enjoy your diamond and color no matter what it is. I''ve read threads on colorless diamonds taking on a beige tint in certain lighting or being around tan painted areas.

I would take it out of the setting and have it appraised. My diamond was appraised (by the same person, BTW) as an H when loose and a J when set.
