What Causes this Issue? How Common is it?

I saw this EC on Blue Nile the other day. Its inscription is clearly visible. I had never seen this before, but I am no expert on ECs. I was wondering, what causes this - is it just placing the inscription in the wrong spot? And have y'all seen the problem before -- how common is it? When the diamond rotates, it can be seen from every angle. Every last one! Surely this can't be "eye clean" with this showing -- can it?

Its on the short end and the angle reflects it.
Not likely visible to the naked eye without hunting for it if at all depending on eyesignt.
When new they have ink in them to make them more visible, an acid bath will remove the ink then the inscription will no longer be black.
A long bath in the ultrasonic may also remove the black.
Problem solved.

Thanks Karl.

So it wouldn't be something that would worry you or cause you to reject a particular diamond? (I mean in general, I'm not considering this particular diamond - its just one I saw in passing.)

It is not something that would make me reject a stone if all else was right. It is a reason to view fancies live before mounting.
Its much easier to deal with than when mounted.

So new it's still damp!
