What carat for a girl with 4-4.5 finger and not really a jewelry wearer?

Been doing some shopping here and have looked at a couple stones...

A - 0.75 Ct, H, VS2
B - 0.68 Ct, G, VS2
C - 0.50 Ct, G, VS1

For a woman who isn''t really big on jewelry and is petite, has a small finger (4-4.5)... what would you guys/gals recommend?

The difference between A & B seemed negligible... but a noticeable (but not dramatic) difference between B & C.

A or B depending on the setting. Setting might make more of a difference than the size of the stone you are considering in this size range. What are you thinking of?

I think .75 is a great size. You can''t go wrong with anything in that size range. So either the .75 or the .68 would be great.

Just make sure that WHATEVER size you get, it''s an ideally cut stone, so it really sparkles.

Going for the Tiffany 6-prong style...

I''m a 4.5 and have a .74 carat stone and it''s probably a great size for someone who doesn''t wear jewelry or want a huge rock. Ditto what others have said about getting a stone that is well cut, this is what makes it sparkle. You can''t go wrong with a tiffany-style setting, very classic.

Have you checked out the WF leagato sleek line or the legato micro pave? That would make a stone of this size look so awesome!

Cinnamon,

She likes classic elegance and well.... has a slight case of "blueboxitus". :) So I am going for the classic Tiff setting in platinum.

blueboxitus, that''s a good one!!! Can you get the specs for us?? I''d focus on the .68 or the .75.

There''s a nice looking 0.56 from Tiffany & Co. on Signed Pieces if you''re interested:

It''s a hair above her size, but it can be sized down. Getting it secondhand from a place like Signed Pieces helps offset the Tiff markup.

Hehe, I hope I added something back to the PS community with the "blueboxitus" diagnosis... :)

I was browsing the "Under 1 Ct" thread and say a couple stones (0.53 & 0.55) with similar ring sizes (and what look to be hand sizes) and thought they looked great. So I am probably aiming for something around there... 0.51-0.55... plain old 0.50 is too close to 0.49 for me. :)

Jstar, thanks for the info on the SignedPieces find... might just have to go see it in person (I''m in NYC for the moment).

I have a 4.5 size finger. I think something around or just above will be great. A well cut .50 will be 5.2mm and .60 is 5.6mm. A .65 would be awesome on her hands. At 5.6mm I think will just big enough for her without being too large.

I was just going to post that! It comes with the blue box!

I would check with Tiffany on the prices for a ring that size first - the signedpieces is an I color and for me I could really see a difference between and I and a G. This might be an issue if you were getting a diamond eternity band to go with it. Not an issue for everyone but I thought I''d point it out. I''d call Tiffany and see what the actually retail on a comparable ring with a better color was.

I love signedpieces, but is it just me or are their discounts not as great as before, esp. with Tiffany pieces? It seems like you''re not savings as much with them anymore. And I have to admit that my ring came appraised at Tiffany for a couple of hundred lower than their ''retail'' price, which was disappointing.

I''m a 4.5 and I wear a 0.5ct... I love it! But if your budget allows for it, of course I would go for bigger...

The SignedPieces was 0.56 I VS1 for $3800 with GOOD polish and GOOD symmetry.

At T&C I picked up the Classic platinum setting with a 0.51 G VS2 for $4400 with EXCELLENT polish and EXCELLENT symmetry.

Is it just me or is the "savings" on that ring at SP debatable?

Yep, I don''t think you''re saving anything and in fact, both prices you mentioned seem incredibly high. For those prices, you should be able to get an eng. ring AND a pendant to match!

Choosing between the two, I''d go w/the Tiffany because it''s better color. My diamond is a G VS2 and I love the color/clarity combo. If I were to go larger at some point, I''d aim for the same color. (I just purchased two stones yesterday for earrings and almost purchased I color, but then decided to go with F color instead because I''ll be owning the diamonds for the rest of my life and do not want to later regret not spending a few hundred more to get colorless diamonds.)

I agree... prices are both high, but the Blue Box is a factor and really I don''t mind paying the extra and getting it straight from T&C.

While some might argue a ring is a ring, etc.... to me, unless the ring is from family... I''d rather stay away from second hand pieces.

That''s not enough difference in price to bother me, either. If it was me, though, I''d try to find an H stone just a little larger.

Well I should point out that my fiance saved about 40% off the retail price at Tiffany by going through signedpieces (also there is no tax on a signedpieces purchase if you aren''t in NYC). I just think lately their prices aren''t as good. Buying from signedpieces was my decision and I was the one who found them via pricescope. I''ve had the ring cleaned and checked at Tiffany and I''m thrilled with it, I just wouldn''t buy a used piece without a certain amount of savings. Otherwise I agree that its better to go to the store - you have more choices too.
