DH and I are going to Vegas this weekend (whoo hoo!) but we haven''t been on a plane since 2007. We''re also not planning to check in any bags. I''ve tried to google this info, but haven''t had much luck. I know about the 3-1-1 rule, but what about things like make-up? Or even deodorant? Bar soap?

Also, what do you wear when you fly? I''ve heard people say they make you take off your shoes now?

You have to take off your shoes to get through security. Wear whatever you want, just know they have to come on and off so I wouldn''t exactly wear high lace up boots. Just whatever is easy. Any sweaters/jackets will also need to be removed and put in a plastic bin. I would recommend not wearing a belt if you don''t have to, as those trigger the security machines.

Make up is fine. Deodorant is fine. Bar soap is fine. Perfume in large bottles may be an issue. Aerosol hairsprays a possible issue.

Put liquids in a 1qt ziploc and make sure it''s easy access. However, I never tell them I have anything if they ask. If they search my bags so be it. I just leave my stuff in my bag and send it through. They never seem to notice anything, and I''ve taken through big tubes of toothpaste back when it was banned.

A lot depends on what airports you are going through. A coworker and I flew from Philly to Pasco, WA (stopping in Detroit and Seattle). On the way there, no issues with anything we were carrying. On the way back, he had to pitch his gel deodorant because it was 4 oz. I usually err on the side of caution and put all my liquid/gel makeup in my plastic bag, but I also almost always check a bag as well, so space isn''t as big of a concern.

You can go to the website of the airport you are traveling out of, and it will tell you the current regulations.

I did go to the TSA website, and that''s where I learned about the 3-1-1 rule. It doesn''t break out anywhere about things like make-up, etc. I guess I''ll just transfer everything into smaller bottles.

Thanks for the tips about the belt. I''ll be sure to tell DH.

If it is in a container that is bigger than 3oz... they will make you throw it away, no matter how full or empty it might be.

My sister tried to argue that there was obviously less than the limited amount in a 5oz bottle once, and the TSA attendant responded with this lovely tidbit...
"Mam, my badge doesn't not say that I am a member of the weight and measures committee."

ETA: If it is a liquid, a gel, or a paste don't take the chance. Especially tubes of toothpaste. Don't take the big ones.

They''re really lax with the liquid rule these days. Last time I flew I saw a college kid bragging about the flask of whiskey in his bag that went through. Just use common sense, wear comfortable clothes and shoes and remember that you have to finish your beverages before going through security. Food is OK to send through though.

I have been travelling a lot this year and I have to say one word of advice. Please wear socks. For some reason, I ALWAYS forget that you are going to have to take your shoes off ( I have flown out of the state 4 times in the last 6 weeks and still don''t remember....yeah, sad. LOL ) They usually have plastic baggies at the airport that you can use to put all your liquids in. I believe it is anything under 3oz that fits in one plastic zipper bag.I actually had a bottle of perfume in side pocket in my purse that went through security in LA and DC,TWICE,without being called out. HMMM...

If I have liquid make up when I''m carrying on, I put it in the baggie. I put my lotions, face wash, hair spray, hair gunk, etc in the bag. You do not have to put soap or deodorant. I''ve been using that makeup that''s the "mousse" foundation and it doesn''t have to be in the baggie.

As HH pointed out, they really are much more lax about the rules these days. They''re really looking for plastic bottles of water. The little stuff almost always goes right thru with no issue when I''ve forgotten to take it out.

They are making you put your shoes ON the belt now, instead of in a bin. All jackets, etc have to come off or you get the royal pat down. They''ll also pat you down if you have on a loose sweater or pull over.

You don''t usually have to have your boarding pass out, but some of the smaller airports I''ve flown out of this year have made you have it when you went thru. I decided it was because TSA didn''t have anything exciting to do there.

I fly at least twice a week and still sometimes forget I need something for my feet if I''m not already wearing socks. It''s the worse in the summer when I wear a lot of sandals. I get really skeeved out by all the nasty feet I have to walk after.

Oh and another note, the whole liquid thing is really a bogus rule anyway. How is 5, 3 oz bottles of something any better than 1 15 oz bottle?

I''ve had liquid lip gloss in my purse I forgot I had in there, and have had no problems. Like many posters said, deodorant and makeup should be OK. I''d just buy travel sizes of all your toiletry items, throw em in a clear 1qt bag, and you should be fine.

And shoes; I always try to wear slip on shoes. Just makes for an easier time through security. Oh, and layers. Wear layers. You never know how hot/cold the plane will be.

I like to cut TSA agents some slack. They make hardly anything. Just make sure your containers are less than 3 oz. I have taken more than 3 items. Think they have let up on that. Make-up has never been an issue. They do ask you take your ziploc bags out and send them through separately.

Thanks everyone.

I''ll play it safe and just make sure I bring travel size items, or items less than 3oz. I''ll also be sure to wear socks with tennis shoes that are easy to take off and put on. oh yeah... and layers.

I just measured my suitcase, and it doesn''t meet the 45 inch rule. It''s 48.5. I don''t know if I''ll have time to go out and buy a new suitcase... any opinions on that?

LH-don''t worry about the suitcase thing. They''re not going to make a stink unless it''s one of those humongo ones. If you get to the gate and they tell you the flight is too full for your baggage they''ll check it right there for you, free of charge.
