Two things I would like people's opinions on:

1) I have a chance to buy a 1.2 ct round diamond. It is not certified. He states that it is a G/VS2. I know his claims really mean nothing. I am going to meet him at a jewelers to verify size and hopefully get a real idea of the color/clarity. If it looks good through a loop and color seems good would I get burned if I paid $3,600 or less as it will be tough to evaluate the cut?

2) I was thinking of turning it into a pendant. Should it be 14k, 18k or platinum for the setting? What are the reasons behind it ( rhodium needing to be replated etc)? Also what should I expect to pay at my jeweler for each type?

Sorry for the rambling but I really need some opinions of all the experts here.

Thanks!

Or any other stones that you think would fit the bill at a trusted vendor.

1. What is the vendor's return policy?

2. If you are going to buy this diamond, please bring it to an independent apppraiser. Here is a link:

3. Why did this vendor choose to not send this diamond to a lab? He could stand to charge more than $3,600. Something to think about.

It is an individual selling it not the jeweler that I was going to bring it to.

Regardless of the seller being an individual or a vendor, please flesh out the return policy, bring it to an independent appraiser as opposed to a jeweler. An independent appraiser has no vested interest, whereas the jeweler may down play the diamond in order to sell you one of his.

No return policy. I buy it I own it.

Could you ask to have it appraised before the purchase is final?
