What are your bad jewelry habits?

I will tell you mine and it’s one that I repeat over and over again. Please tell me I’m not alone in this! If I’m on the hunt for something, I often end up with something that is 90% or even 95% of what I want instead of holding out for it to be 100% it. I just have no patience! For example, I wanted a 3 stone gypsy ring that had a decent weight to it, was in a specific price point, that was in yellow gold, and the stones were differently shaped. In other words not all three round. After looking for what seemed like forever, I ended up with an almost perfect ring, except that it’s rose gold. I actually really love it but I sometimes still look online to see if I can find that yellow one. Once I was looking for a particular type of band and ended up buying two bands because they were so close but not 100% what I was looking for. Often I do end up buying multiple things which defeats the purpose of the budget consciousness, which limits me ha ha ha. Please share your bad jewelry habits with me!

HI:

That I rarely clean my jewellery.

cheers--Sharon

@Mreader I agree with everything you do because I do the same. I have multiples of almosts. That’s what I call them. I’ve wasted more money on almosts. Now I really TRY to think things through and TRY to wait until I’m pretty sure I will be happy with it.

I get on too many tangents. Start looking at one thing then get an idea and start looking for that and so on. It gets to the point that I actually forget what I started looking for.

Also guilty of “just looking” we all know where that leads! If you don’t know what’s out there, you’re not tempted. Same with significant others I guess ;)2

I sometimes take naps with my rings on but when I got to sleep for the night, I do take them off. Shouldn’t sleep with them at all but there you go.

I tweak my own jewelry. I have altered almost everything I own in some tiny way.
I have accumulated a large amount of vintage/used jewelry from yard sales, estate sales, pawn shops etc.

Sometimes things just need a good polish, maybe some filing, maybe the prongs need adjusting. Sometimes the stones need straightening. I have pliers and know how to use them!

I guess I'm just not happy until I mess with something just a little bit!

I will buy rings that don't fit my current finger size, and then not size them, so they just sit in the drawer, unworn. My size has been fluctuating a bit due to health issues, so I'm hesitating to size them now, and then have to do it again in a year.

I also buy stones I don't exactly have a plan for. I get annoyed at myself for tying up my bling funds with no plan.

Finally, I'm a magpie, but also trying to work within a budget. I need to learn to be more patient and focused about how I build my collection. I've only been collecting for a few years, but I've managed to waste a fair amount of money on small purchases I don't foresee being part of my collection for the long-term. Like you said, @Mreader and @MamaBee "almosts".

I'm bad about remembering to remove my rings for lotion. Especially since I constantly have to apply it. So I spend a decent amount of time having to clean them. Which for me means either setting up the ultrasonic or dragging out a brush and soap every week lol.

I'm also bad about taking things off to clean house. Except for when making beds and moving furniture or doing exercise. I absolutely take off for that. I also sleep in my things <<.>> I'm basically a horrible jewellery mom lmao.

I'm poor, and I spend a bit of my free time with you lot.
I can't help it, I just like ya. You all make me laugh and you lovingly feed my addiction vicariously with much care and attention.
I look at amazing jewelry and stones more than I should admit to.
And I dream and scheme for my next piece and lie to my little spinel box about how they'll be set. Soon. Shhhh, yes yes, soon. Knowing full well I'm soft BS-ing them something fierce because I wear a wedding stack. And that's it.

Impulse buys! I've found personally it's much easier to let go of the pieces I've bought on a whim if I need some extra funds, rather than my planned and very thought out purchases that I can't imagine to part with. It's a very bad habit and an unnecessary loss of funds. I'm therefore on ban island lol.

I also have a problematic tendency to up my budget. During some of my searches I start thinking if I'm already spending x amount, might as well add extra $ for one thats "better". Not the most disciplined way of doing things but if I can afford it, sometimes it might actually be more beneficial as I can potentially avoid returns, disappointments and "half wants". But being able to afford it is still key, I would never go for something way out of budget and can't afford at all.

My bad jewelry habit is that I more or less stopped wearing jewelry since the pandemic began, because of how little we went anywhere. I tend to prefer to wear my jewelry when going out, not when staying home. I usually can't be bothered to wear it around the house.

So I pretty much stopped buying jewelry as well. Why buy it if I'm not wearing it?

I take my jewelry off and leave it lying everywhere!!! Such a bad habit! Even if I take jewelry off in my bedroom, I leave it lying on top of the jewelry box.. not in it lol

Not cleaning my jewellery often enough and impulse buying.

Going to Tucson in Jan/Feb 2023 is probably not a good idea!

DK :))

Continuing to buy more jewelry when I never actually change what I wear? I've worn the same (non-blingy) ring for the last six years, and two years ago, I replaced the white gold hoop earring that I had since I was in university with ... a pair of white gold huggies.

I used to roll up my jewelry in kleenex and tuck them in the pockets of purses. Then, after I'm pretty sure throwing out a pair of yellow gold huggies, I decided to improve on that habit and started putting my jewelry in little pouches instead of kleenex. However most of those pouches are black and just "disappear." A recent scare about losing my diamond studs has hopefully broken me of that! I couldn't find the earrings for over three weeks. Fortunately they did turn up -- in a spot I (a) don't remember putting them in at all, and (b) that I had been in and out of at least once a day since the earrings went MIA and I never saw them. I ordered a six pack of hot pink 4" x 4" x 2" jewelry cases and I promise to only use those if I am moving things around, like from my condo to TR's, or putting things in my purse "for later."

1. I rarely clean my jewelry
2. I rarely wear my jewelry

But make no mistake, I love and enjoy my jewelry :)

I sleep in my rings. *horrors* 2DDA41E4-ABA0-46AA-A3C5-0BE785EA9048.gif But if I didn’t, I couldn’t get them on over my old, arthritic knuckles for work the next morning. And yes, they spin all day long so they are sized correctly.307803F9-6DBE-43CD-942B-142D035CBA23.gif
I also find RHR’s very uncomfortable, and yet, I still buy them.

For me it's zeroing in on a favourite piece and ignoring all the rest. I'll have that one pendant in particular that I love and I'll wear nothing else but it. I'll choose a couple of rings and wear only them. My other jewellery sits in a box because wearing it means I'm not wearing my favourites and I want to wear my favourites 100% of the time! My best friend calls it criminal to have so many beautiful pieces and never wear them and I've been trying to break the habit but with very minor success.

That’s a good one! And also quite common I bet.

I relate to the rhr thing! I far prefer wearing on my left hand only but force myself to have something on the right bc I have a lot of rings.

My mom did this. She did lose stuff sometimes and I think that habit contributed :naughty:
