I''m looking at a .50 carat diamond rated E in color and VS2 in clarity by EGL (unfortunately, not GIA). Stats on the certificate say:
- Depth 60.4
- Table Width 59
- Crown height 14%
- Pavillion Depth: 44%
- Polish: Good
- Symmetry: Very Good
- Culet: None
"Premium Cut"

Price: $990. I''m told that a .50 carat diamond goes for $800-$2000, and a salesman at another store said that he suspects there must be a problem with the cut somehow, or that the grade isn''t accurate, or else they would have gotten a GIA certificate and/or charged more. The stats above appear to be within a "class 2" cut, but apparently there are other parameters not reported on the certificate.

Any advice? For $1250 I could get a .49 carat / H / SI1 / class 3 from another vendor which seems worse all around, except that maybe it''s really true instead of hiding something.

Light Return: Good
Fire: Good
Scintillation: Fair
Spread or diameter for weight: Very Good
Total Visual Performance 4.6 - Good - Only if price is your main criterion

A half-carat ideal, E VS2 will be almost 2000

gia and ags are two reputable labs that also have ''cut grades''. a well cut stone that won''t look good on one of these grading reports is usually sent to another lab that will show it better.
know what you are buying. cut is extremely important.
