What about this antique old miners?

I think its totally gorgeous!

Would look superb in a 4 prong plat. setting w/ pave or bead set band.

I see why you like it but I wouldn''t buy that particular stone because it looks quite abraded on the facet junctions (the white-ish blurred lines along the pavilion junctions, you can see it in the bottom reflections)...You could do better.

Thanks Surf. I was hoping you''d look and answer. I see what you mean on the small one. Still, it has charisma, to me, and I keep looking at it but can''t justify the price for something so deep that would look so tiny.

Now, I love old stones but don''t know that much about what to look for.

Can you tell me about these two:

1. http://www.oldworlddiamonds.com/inv_details.php?ID=369&SHAPE=OM&PAGE=3

This, I think, is a little bit different of a cut than what you normally see in old miners. Does it have more facets than usual? I can''t put my finger on it but it looks different (not in my preferred way, though). But, I''m thinking that this one would give good fire, which you can see some of in the picture. Your opinion?

2. http://www.oldworlddiamonds.com/inv_details.php?ID=2132&SHAPE=OM&PAGE=2

I''m not educated in old stones, but it appears the center is too open. What sort of effect would that have? I know, light leakage, but would that appear dark, dead, . . . ?

Thanks so much.

Hey sonoma, re: those other two below...

the first one looks like a festival of carbon vomit inside (tons of black gunk, which is detracting from even being able to see what the cut and faceting looks like, can you see all that black schmutz inside it?) so I wouldn't even consider looking at that one.

the other one, it's got that "maltese cross" thing going on in the middle which can be cool looking but something looks off about it. It's got this weird overtone to it, which could be bad lighting, or something else, you'd have to see that in person though.

I dont mind looking and commenting on stones online but if/when you're seriously ready to buy, you really have to see them in person because with antique stones, each one preforms differently and only you can know what floats your boat and what doesn't, you know what I mean? But there are a lot of cool stones in that inventory for sure!

ETA: Of all the three you've linked, if I was seriously considering any of them, I'd see if the first one could be polished out to get rid of those abrasions, then it might be an awesome stone...Just another thought. Really fab antique stones are hard to come by so if you found one like the above, and could polish it out a bit and make it faboo, then that would be one way to go (assuming you couldn't find one in pristine condition as is).

DIA GEM! If you're reading this, what say you about polishing out the facet junctions of that first one? Would it be worth doing?

I rarely re-cut or polish old stones unless there is severe damage!
That specific Diamond looks good..., abrasions are part of the authenticity of the Diamond..., kind of like an ID...
Please dont forget you are seeing a "zoomed" single frame image..., which usually lets you focus on the "negative particles"..., it will look differently in real life and in movement

But as you said..., it must be seen with the eyes!

Thanks Surf and Diagem ! !

I really appreciate your help. I'm not necessarily looking to buy right now but wanted to start learning more about old stones, so wanted to "understand" these three in specific.

The "carbon vomit"

one I posted as the faceting was a bit unlike most OMCs. The other one, I just did a search on maltese crosses in old stones and now I know about that. Thanks so much. I don't think I like the maltese cross effect but kozibe absolutely does it for me.

The tiny one (.51) I still just love but has dimensions of 4.77*4.20*3.4. Is approx. $1,000 an o.k. price for that? But, it's so small, I don't think you'd see much of the wonderfulness it possesses as it's just tiny. It's just the cutest thing, though, I think.
