I do not see a Who''s Who thread for you. Am I missing it? I looked over all three pages and I am not seeing a who''s who thread. You''re a major contributor to this forum and need one! If there is one already and I am missing it..then I guess you get two.
3.gif
I am sorry if you''ve said you didn''t want one and I missed that as well, but I don''t recall seeing it.

Let me start..this is what I believe I know..your name is Layla, you''re FI is John, you''ve had a ton of wedding stress but it is finally looking up, you are wonderful with flower advice, and you just found a new and better job relatively recently! Let''s do something simple..what''s your favorite kind of music?

Please Layla, we would love to hear more about you!!!

Linda

Yes, Layla! Please tell us more about you...

Aww Sarah, I just got the request through the Moderators and was so touched. And as well all know I''m a blabber-mouth I was game!

Hi Linda!!!
35.gif

You''ve got everything right so far... so let''s see

My favorite kind of music? I''m not a big music person... I''ve had the same 200 songs on my ipod for over 2 years running... never updated them, and listen to them again and again happily. I like music that reminds me of things, times and places and either with good lyrics that touch me, or good rhytym that makes me move. I like rock country, blues, alternative (or whatever its called now-- I''m showing my age, pop, some rap. It''s all good.

What else you want to know?
2.gif
I''m not really sure how these threads work and I''m not on here all that often.
4.gif

Apparently I can''t edit my post. Okay.

HI DF!!!
35.gif

Hi right back to you!!!!

So, what do you think we should know?

Layla,

What are your favorite colors, food etc????

Yay Gypsy, tell us more, sweetheart!!! Love the new PS gift!!!
36.gif

LOL. Okay what do I think you should know. I am a HORRIBLE speller and I make frequent and horrific grammatical errors. My bad, and no... I don''t anticipate that changing. Sorry.

Favorite colors: I love red... deeper reds, like bright garnets. But I have the most boring wardrobe imaginable. It''s all black and grey... occasionally I''ll get jiggy with a little navy and brown. We''re talking now! LOL. After the wedding I do want to completely purge my wardrobe and by some new pieces... some COLOR pieces. If you saw me everyday you''d think my favorite color was black.

Foods. Oh, man. I''m a foodie. I love foodie (with the figure to prove it). Honestly I''ll eat any type of food as long as the quality is good. I was raised by a Muslim grandmother (though I''m not Muslim) and so I do have weird pork issues. Random pork parts are one thing I just can''t eat. Now... random cow or lamb parts... I''m there. But I do EAT pork and ham and procuitto, just have to pick and chose. Weird. My favorite meals are what I call (and I''m gonna misspell this) smorgasboard dinners. Some cheeses, some breads, pate, a few cold smoked sausages (preferably chicken, again the pork parts thing) chopped up, some fresh fruit, maybe some really nice quality (hello Whole Foods) cold cuts, and olives. I love small plates meals with lots of different tastes to choose from. One of my biggest luxury indulgences is tasting menus at 5 star restuarants with wine pairings. John loves this too and while we aren''t having a honeymoon this year, we are going to SF on the 27th (weekend after our wedding) and going to a really nice restuarant, doing the tasting menu thing, and following that up with brunch the next morning at the Ritz. YAY! Hopefully, we''ll be able to do that. I''m not a 100% sure yet though.

Other things you should know about me. I keep starting to write novels. And then leave them half complete. I have a feeling I''m gonna get the post wedding blues and I''m trying to encourage myself (with no success to date) to start wrting one of my favorite books again. It''s about a character names Ari who is based loosely on me. It''s a chick-lit genre book about her finding herself. And I think the reason I keep getting stalled on it is because I''m still trying to find myself... and sometimes Ari stresses me out, cause I want so much for her (and for me) but I don''t know how to make it happen for her. It''s a weird relationship.

I am a project focused person... I go from project to project really immersing (compulsively) myself into them. But when the projects are done... they are done. I have (somewhere in our storage) an entire scrap book devoted to my dream house. Floor plans, design details, down to the type of glass on the shower. I haven''t looked for it in years, but did spend nearly a year and a half devoted to it. It''s also why I have these half complete novels running around.

I love to read. I''ve been on a fantasy kick recently (last couple of years). But for the majority of my life I''ve been a romance novel reader and I still enjoy a good romance novel... when I can find one.

I have three cats. Hally, Duncan and Frodo. Hally is my girl, and she''s black and white and she''s a terror. A natural disaster truth to tell. Duncan is my first born and my love, he''s my boy and my heart. Frodo''s nickname is ''Dodo" and it fits him, he''s a bit of a weirdo, and a little neurotiv with it, but he''s a good boy.

HI Skippy! Thank you honey!

Okay, so spelling and grammer and poor word choice above is even making MY eyes water. Sorry all, can''t edit it though, won''t let me.

Layla, you sound like such a wonderful person and you write novels to boot!!!!!!!

I can''t wait to met you at the next PS get together in SF.

Linda

I''ll bet writing novels (even half finished ones) can be theraputic! You remind me of me with your dream house scrapbook. I''m totally like that, too. I have a binder with page protectors that contain decorating/remodel/furniture ideas for every room in the house.

Yaaaay this actually got posted!

I will be back later, I thought it was rejected.
5.gif

I am back! I also love romance novels, I don''t read as many as I would like, but they make me giggle.
5.gif
And food! Do you like fondue at all? I personally
30.gif
fondue! How''d you get to know so much about flowers?
5.gif
You''re the resident flower guru!

hahaha, Gypsy, welcome to thread that doesn''t allow you to edit your posts. It''s maddening.

So you are a closet romance reader?
31.gif
Well, not in the closet anymore. I keep going back to your thread to look at your makeup. You have such gorgeous features. Your eyes, your cheebones. I want to fly up there and get my makeup done before I look my age.

More details woman!!

Let’s see. This is weird, I am self absorbed, but it does seem strange just to prattle on about myself. Not that I don’t anyway, but in short spurts, not like this.

Okay so, John.
John and I met while I was in law school. We had a mutual acquaintance that kept telling us we’d be perfect for each other but… both of us shrugged it off. I was in the beginning stages of seeing someone else, and he was put off by the whole “wants to be a lawyer thing”… then one night we ended up talking, and didn’t stop till 12 hours later! We had a lot in common, made each other laugh and just had a really good time. The next night was talked for another 12 hours. John isn’t a talker normally, either. After a couple of weeks, I told him I was moving back to CA for the summer, and wasn’t sure I’d be back to the east coast as I was seriously re-considering law school. He panicked and blurted out… “But… you can’t, I think I’m falling in love with you.” Then he realized what he said, and fell off his chair. We spent a few days together after that, and really got to know each other more. He helped me move out of my apartment, and put my furniture into storage. Then took me to the airport. We talked for months after, and then he sent me a ticket to come out and see him for my birthday (2 months later). I went and things were just… magical. I had already decided to take that semester off of school, but in that week with him I decided that I would give law school another shot. Honestly, more to be with John than anything else. So in December of 1999 we moved in together, I returned to law school. And we’ve been together since. I did graduate law school, but it was a difficult process for me because I REALLY hated it. But I have to say now, I’m glad I didn’t quit. I don’t think I could have gotten through it without him, and I can’t imagine my life without him. Or my cats.

Linda, Thank you! I can’t wait to meet you either. We’ll have to plan one for November. Or late October. What do you think?

Miranda, yes, that’s exactly it. I spent hours poring over websites and magazines and anything I could get my hands on. Writing is very therapeutic, honestly. I wish I had time/inclination to do it now. Although, the first couple months of this job here have really given me a lot of material to work with. It may not be as hard to start this book off again as I thought.

If you guys like… I can share a passage out of my novel with you and you can tell me if I should keep going? I used to want to be a writer. Now, I just want to finish a book, for me. Just to be able to say, in my own mind. I finished that. Ya know?

Sarah, I have NEVER done fondue. I’ve been with John since I was 24 so… by the time I was old enough to have discretionary income to afford that kind of stuff I was with him, and HE doesn’t like fondue. BUT just a couple months ago he broke down and PROMISED that we’d go. I would actually love to do it next week for my B-day. But I can’t afford anything like that before the wedding. Maybe in October we’ll go. We have a couple of places around here with good reviews. I think I’m going to ADORE IT though. What are you favorite romance novels? I’ve been reading them since my VERY early teens, so if you need any recommendations, let me know.

Miracles, not really a closet romance reader. I have so many of the things (I like to keep my books and re-read them) they permeate my home (usually just my bedroom and office). Yes, the no editing thing takes some getting used to.

Aw, the story of you and John is SO sweet. How lucky you both are!

And I would love to read a bit of your novel. I have tried to start one a couple times but it really just sucks the life out of you sometimes. It''s so hard!

DISCLAIMER: Has had NO editing. I suck at editing, and grammar, and punctuation. I like dialogue and plot… so that’s what my drafts concentrate on.

Okay… so here’s some background.

Main Character is named Ari. She just broke up with her ex, who cheated on her repeatedly. She doesn’t currently have a job, but is a lawyer. Hates being one though.
Lia—Ari’s best friend and a lawyer at a Major law firm. Trying to get her to date more. Very protective.

What’s happening. Lia has dragged Ari to her firm’s Christmas party in an effort to get her out of her funk.

Chris—who you meet for the first time in this scene will be the ‘love interest.’

Two hours later, my stomach filled with foie gras pate, yummy bread, smoked sturgeon, caviar and a sinful assortment of other seafood I was thinking to myself that Lia’s firm clearly knew how to put out a good spread. They had opted for cocktail stations instead of plated meals and had clearly gone all out. There was a pate bar, an assortment of breads that would have done a French baker proud, a lobster station where they served freshly steamed cracked lobsters, an entire spread of cold seafood, including the caviar, a pasta station, a carving station, and that didn’t even cover the goodies the white gloved waiters were floating around the room carrying in beautiful silver trays. Yum. I was in heaven. And heaven was only enhanced by the four glasses of champagne, 2 French martinis and 5 shots of Patron tequila I had consumed. Yes, I was as drunk as a sailor on leave. And I was reveling in it.
I was currently perched on a lovely padded chair admiring the centerpiece on the table. Submerged cymbidium orchids: lovely ones with magenta hearts and ivory outer petals with glossy green folded banana leaves. Breathtaking understated elegance. This is the best thingy I’ve ever been to. Umm… party. Not thingy. Rhymes with dingy. Funny word dingy….

“Ari! There you are, I’ve been looking everywhere for you.” Oh, hmm.

“Well, here I am. This is a lovely dingy by the way Lia, just lovely, thanks for bringing me.”

“Dingy?”

“Oh, whoops, I was just thinking about.. boat, ships… you know the view is very inspiring here.” I clarify waiving vaguely at the completely obstructed window on the opposite wall, “Sorry, it’s a lovely party.”

“Well that’s great. I’m so glad you’re having fun.” Was her smile a little too bright? “Ari honey, have you met Bryce? My counterpart in Fraud.”

I tried to focus on the guy that had stepped forth, Ooooh, pretty. I shake his hand.

“Ari, Lia’s told me so much about you that I had to come over here and meet the woman Lia calls her best friend in the world. It’s a pleasure.”

“Likewise.” I’m on automatic pilot for the rest of the conversation. Horrid weather, lovely party, then just nodding and an “Oh how fascinating,” every so often as he tells me all about the exciting world of fraud. Typical lawyer. But nice eye candy.

“That sounds very nice, doesn’t it Ari honey?” Suddenly Lia’s voice drifts in out of the fog of inane pleasantries. She’s looking straight at me expectantly, so is Mr. Fraud is Fun. “Of course. Absolutely lovely.” Wondering what exactly “that” was.

He breaks into a big smile of relief. Nice teeth. “Great well then, I’ll give you a call after the holidays, and we’ll plan it then.”

“Great.” I echo, now wondering why the man was going to be calling me.

“Alright then, ladies I really just popped in tonight just to put in a quick appearance, so if you’ll excuse me, I‘ve got to get home. Have to be up way before dawn if I’m going to catch anything.”

What’s he catching? “No problem, I hope you have a good night. And good luck tomorrow,” seems like an appropriate response. He mutters something about looking forward to calling me, again leaving me to wonder why he’s doing so, and takes his leave. God, was he boring or what. Serious buzz-kill. I needed another drink.

“No you don’t. And he isn’t a buzz-kill or boring. You, my dear, are drunk.”

“Yes. Lia. I realize that, which is why I want another drink so that I can maintain this wonderful feeling. And drunk or not, that man was boring. Why is he calling me? And what are we planning?”

“A date.” She’s totally exasperated; I should remember to get her a drink or two, too.

“A what?”

“A date, you agreed to let Bryce take you out.”

“Bryce? Who’s Bryce?” And what kind of name was Bryce anyway?

“Christ, now I need a drink” See, I told you she needed a crink, umm… drink, “never mind. We’ll talk about it tomorrow.”

“Okay let’s hit the bar then. We need drinks.”

“Like a hole in the head. Lead on, MacDuff.” No problem. If I’m MacDuff, what character is she? Hmm. I don’t remember who said that line. I’ll have to look it up when I go home. Oh the bar. Hmm… what am I going to have now?

“What do you like?” A deep voice at my left ear asks. Doesn’t sound like Lia. I turn. Nope, not Lia. More eye candy. Except this one has a twinkle in his eye. Mischief. I like mischief.

“Thank you. That’s the best compliment I’ve received this month. I like mischief too.” And he can read minds. Cool.

“Ari. This is Christopher Lyman, he’s a new senior associate with the firm.” Lia’s voice informs me from my right ear. Wow, I have stereo hearing. “Chris, this is my slightly buzzed best friend, Ari.”

“Pleasure to meet you Ari. Pick your poison, and pull up a stool if you like. I barely know anyone, and with the exception of a particularly frisky clam, this is the best conversation I’ve had all night.” He’s yummy. Chocolate hair with caramel streaks and honey kissed skin. Like a giant candy treat. Wonder if he’d let me lick him.

“Me too.” What are we doing again? Oh, drinks. “Patron, please.” Why stop a good thing? Lia orders a Chivas straight, and Chris raises his eyebrows. “No lightweights here I see.”

“Oh we’re both featherweights,” I confide, “I’m just drowning reality in tequila because my ex-boyfriend is an ass. And Lia’s drinking ‘cause I’ve driven her to it. Right Lia?”

“You got that right at least.” She says resigning herself to another barstool, “And he’s your ex because he’s an ass. If he wasn’t an ass he’d still be your boyfriend.”

Wow was that ever hard to follow. But I nod, ‘cause it’s Lia.

Suddenly it occurs to me to ask Chris, “Do you know which character in MacBeth says ‘Lead on, MacDuff?”

I hear Amelia groan, but I’m still looking at Chris, who has a funny expression on his face, “I don’t know off hand Ari. But I have a very good volume of Shakespeare at home. How about I look it up, and give you a call with the answer?”

What a nice guy. So nice. Why was Amelia glaring at him? Hmm… pretty orchids on at the bar too. Immersed in water. Kinda morbid though. Drowning Orchids. Mean, too. Poor orchids. Someone should rescue them.

“Someone should rescue those orchids!” I declare interrupting whatever it was Lia and Chris were talking about.

“See!” was Amelia’s only answer, to Chris or me, I’m not sure. But she was glaring at Chris again.

Layla--I liked the excerpt! Especially the "I wonder if he''d let me lick him" line--hee!

And your heroine has good taste in tequila.

Ahahahah, I lol''ed a lot. I would "totallly" read that book.

That is so sweet about how y''all met! And hey I think your writing is good!!

Makes me want to go write some. I don''t really have any favorites romance novel-wise..I like to just grab one and read it haha.

My other favorite books are totally random though. And I forgot to say I love your cat''s names, haha! So cute!! And I have a feeling that you WILL

fondue. It is rather expensive unfortunately. FI and I have only been able to go recently because the fondue places near us (mainly The Melting Pot franchise) have been hurting a bit because of the economy, so they''ve been running "sales" kind of. Like the whole four courses for like $30 per person..which for Melting Pot is an amazing price.

But we won''t be going back any time soon that''s for sure, we''re in the same boat as you. We''ve really been struggling these past few months.

But hey B-day sounds like a good excuse to me! I am throwing FI a surprise b-day party. So I am using it as an excuse to buy a nice cake maybe!

He likes the homemade cake..but I could so go for a yummy bakery cake. What day is your b-day exactly? I don''t want to forget!

I thoroughly enjoyed the excerpt, Layla, and could relate to your heroine only too well.

When you''re learning to write, you''re advised to write what you know, and it sounds as if Layla/Lia is doing just that!

. Continue the research (absolutely mandatory

) and keep writing; You''re a talented gal!

Aww, I wish the melting pot in Portland was running specials!!! I love that place. Fondue is so delicious (granted, my favorite food is cheese so it would be hard not to love it!). Maybe I''ll just have to make my own at home...and get a fondue pot...and make Kris clean it afterwards.

It left us annoyed we spent so much money on the ingredients (like $40..we didn''t have ANY OF IT) and craving Melting Pot even more for actual good food.

But maybe yours will turn out better! We were trying to double boiler it or whatever..didn''t work out so well.

LOL--well, I have made successful fondue in the past, so I have hope! I remember looking for kirsch and it was SO hard to find. It does make a difference though.

I should start checking around for fondue pots on craigslist--I think it''s one of those things that people get and then never use.

Re: your excerpt. I want to keep reading. And I think that is the best compliment a writer can get. I was bummed when it was over- I want to know what happens. You are funny too, drowning orchids bit was cute and original.

So in answer to your question, yes you should keep writing.

Also- coincidence- my best friend is Amelia and I have thought of naming a daughter (if I have one) Amelia, but calling her Lia. I love it!

Thank you China Cat! That''s a very high compliment. I have 119 pages written in that book. It all needs serious editing, but I if I start editing, I never finish writing. So with this book I forced myself not to edit, but to write. Of course, since I stopped on page 119, the not editing trick didn''t work either. LOL.

I think I could get into it again. It would be a nice hobby. I''ve been bored with the books out there I''ve bought recently, and that''s always one of the things that makes me start writing again. We''ll see.

I love the name Amelia, Lia for short. It''s very pretty. Great choice!

LadyP-- thank you. He''s a yummy guy and she has a sweet tooth.

Hi Miracles, thank you honey. I don''t know if I''d ever sent it anyway even if I did finish it. But... I''ve started to get a hankering for trying to finish it. It would be a nice personal goal and I''d feel good about that.

Hi Sarah, Thank you. As for how we met, yeah it''s a funny story. One of my favorite all time memories of our first couple of weeks together is from when we were unloading the truck and moving my stuff into storage, we were EXHAUSTED, had not slept and were just so goofy. I remember looking at him and thinking, "this is so easy. Can it really be this easy?" Some things are meant to be.

I can''t take a lot of credit for the cats names. Hally was given her name by the shelter. Duncan''t name was "Twinkie" and we just couldnt'' deal with that... so we thought Twinkie... baked goods, Betty Crocker... Duncan Hines... DUNCAN. As for Frodo, LOTR was all the rage and he was a very interpid little kitten exploring our back yard, bold and tiny and adventerous. So it fit, at the time.

The melting pot in San Jose is running specials and I have to say I am tempted with all the talk about it in this thread. What''s your favorite cheese fondue of their menu? The classic swiss one looks good to me. My B-Day is September 2nd. It''s so sweet of you to throw him a surprise B-day party!

Thank you Isabel... yeah, it''s just a lot of ''what I know''... don''t really think anyone else would be interested, but it entertains me. LOL.

I have to remember to post some pics of the cats in this thread.

Omg love the kitty names, so cute!! Hehe. Especially Frodo. Oooh! My favorite..let''s see. Probably the bourbon bacon cheddar, but they don''t have that one very often anymore. Aside from that I like the Wisconsin trio A LOT. But you need to like blue/bleu cheese for that one..can''t taste it a lot, but it adds a kick and if you absolutely despise it..well then it might be bad. Aside from that you can''t go wrong! The swiss is good, cheddar is good, and the spicy one with the tortilla chips is yummy, too! Man I love that place.

I''ve never thrown a surprise party before, so I am so excited about that! Only two of his friends are coming I think, but it''ll be a great nerdfest. I bought some WALL-E themed party supplies..I know that''s immature and kiddish, but it''ll be fun. We both LOVE that movie!
