We asked this question during a work zoom happy hour and the answers were fun and interesting! It deters you from just listing your favorite movies if they’re popular since most likely everyone’s areas seen it. My favorite movie is Lilo and Stitch but almost everyone I know has seen that movie...

My 3 were
1. Eighth Grade: super touching, hilarious, cringey story of what being a 8th grade girl is like (and what being a dad to one is like). It’s really sweet and wholesome overall. You can feel the developmental awkwardness in your bones.

2. Kubo and the 2 Strings: gorgeously animated movie by my favorite studio. Mix of mythology and the strength of family love. I like the message of it, it’s not your typical happy fairytale ending.

3. The Fall (2006) starring Lee Pace. It’s visually stunny and I found the storyline so moving and the little girl in it is the most authentic depiction of innocent childhood that I’ve ever seen on screen. I actually own this on blu Ray so I can show it to people since it’s hard to find on streaming services. This one I wouldn’t recommend for younger kids as the storylines get quite dark.

I’d love to hear other people’s recommendations of less well known films!

Great thread.

1. The Lives of Others. Powerful movie about privacy and obsession in Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall.

2. 25th Hour. Ed Norton play a criminal who has 24 hours to say his goodbyes before he is put behind bars for seven years. A Spike Lee classic with Ed Norton, Barry Pepper and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

3. Kicking and Screaming
Noah Baumbach (not the Will Ferrell movie).

So many more but these 3 come to mind.

I don't know that these would qualify in terms of "most people haven't seen them" but the majority of my own family and friends hadn't seen one or more so ...

1. The King's Speech
2. This Beautiful Fantastic
3. The Peanut Butter Falcon

I recently watched:

1. Miracle in Cell no.7 (2019 Turkish edition)
2. Mudbound- it was about racism in the 1940's Mississippi.
3. Bird Box- Apocalyptic Thriller

With all of these movies, I was emotional for days. All of them evoked strong feelings of anger, sadness, weirdness!

My other two are:

Hidden Figures
The Help

Mud, 29th Street, Beautiful Girls

That most people haven't seen...

City of God
Parasite (won awards of course but I don't know anyone else who saw it)
The original Girl With a Dragon Tattoo

All from other countries of course. I like watching movies in their original languages with subtitles.

Loved all these movies. And ditto to preferring watching foreign films in their native language with subtitles. And foreign films are generally better than American films IMO.

Mudbound- it was about racism in the 1940's Mississippi.

That was a great movie. I am going to check out your other 2 recs as I haven't seen those.

The Mission
The Princess Bride ( I’m surprised how many people have not seen it)
Brave (Disney)

The Gods Must Be Crazy

( still racking my brain for 2 more:)

Oh my god I haven’t thought about this movie in ages! I loved this as a kid :)

I think city of god won awards as well. I actually didn’t see Girl with a Dragon tattoo because i almost never like the movies more than the books and I loved the book. Don’t even get me started on the Enders Game adaptation. I’m glad this one was good!

OMG! I went to see that when it came out and walked out of the theater. That was in the 1980s, I believe.

In no particular order:

1. Freaks (1932) - quite disturbing, and it was originally banned for this reason.
2. Yojimbo (1961) - a Kurosawa's masterpiece that was the inspiration for A Fistful of Dollars.
3. The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec (2010) - a French fantasy film directed by Luc Besson, fun to watch and I found it refreshing as it is not same old same old like Lord of the Ring Triology, Harry Potter films, and those involving vampires of recent years. I saw it on TV one late evening, and I was hooked, stayed up watching the whole thing instead of going to bed! Very usual especially it was subtitled.

DK :))

Oh man I love Wes Anderson movies! Favorite lines ever:

LOVED The Host. Loved The Devil's Backbone.

Hated Audition. Not easy to watch is da truth on that one. :errrr: I saw it in the movie theater and wanted to leave but my friend (who is now my BIL) refused to leave and we had to sit through the entire movie.

Have to check out Thirst.

I like good horror too. Psychological horror is my favorite.
