Wh Gold Tension Set - Round G SI? Ideal?

My fiancee really loves the tension set white gold diamond rings, especially with a diamond of around a caret. I have a budget of ~3500 for the diamond, and am trying to get something that will look really good without breaking the bank.

We are looking at getting a round diamond. Would an Ideal be better? With the Tension set, will the cut have to be good or very good +?

I am thinking of getting her a G or H, probably an SI (It seems to fit the budget) Here are a few I have been looking at(I copied my wishlist from 1 of about 6 sites):

You probably should call whiteflash to ask about the stones...in searching by cut (for ideal cuts), it would be very difficult to get that size for that price, even if you go to a J color......What is your top priority in a stone?????

Have you had a chance to read the tuorials on this site???
Cut is the major factor determining the beauty of the stone....the stones a vendor has "in house" such as the smaller one, have been examined and "analyzed" so to speak....The larger one is probably something they have never seen, but they could call it in and look at it for you....there is a lot of missing information about the angles,etc. Also, if you look at the information, there is quite a discrepancy in the #''s re: the diameter....It could be a very nice stone, but no one will no until someone sees it firsthand...

But it looks like the only "in house" good lookers available in your price range might be a bit smaller than 1 carat...That was determined by the use of the "cut quality" search above....

PS: just noticed the tension setting part again....the wf stone probably wouldn''t be a good idea , because it has a thin girdle (it was found on WF site under Expert Selection - you could look ther for others).....I think your best bet would be to call a vendor or two for suggestions.......Do you have a particular setting in mind> Do you plan to have it set when you buy the stone (at the same place)???

Who is making the setting ? Will WF send out the stone to be set or is this up to you ?

It is possible that either girdle thickness or clarity t disqualify some otherwise perfectly nice diamonds from being tension set. It would be great to have the setter''s nod for the stone...

But it may be the case that the maker of the tension ring does not work with clients'' diamonds. Have you asked ?

One more: tension setting cannot be sized, so you need to know the exact ring size for it in advance.

I was originally looking at tension settings from either Jared or another jeweler in town. After reading on this site and others, I think I will be going with a Gelin Abaci. Either a TR-006 or TR-007 in white gold.

It looks like I will need a SI1 or better stone, and a store that will allow me enough time to get it appraised and sent to Mickey Roof (or ??) for approval and mounting.

Both those settings allow only round diamonds - according to the "stone specification" listed fro them.

Is titanium too futuristic for your tension setting ?

She liked some of the Titanium rings, but Gelin Abaci only makes the 007 setting in 14K/18 Gold, or Platinum.

We have decided on the TR-007 with a round Diamond

Yeah, GA does not work titanium... I didn't know you were considering it at all, otherwise, oh well, the rings do exist in Ti as well.

You have got a lot of good input in this thread, but I''d like to stress a couple of factors: the possibility of tension setting depends on the type of inclusions and locations, SI1-grade feathers along the girdle edge would not be a good idea and the girdle thickness has to be thick enough to handle the stress.. I''m sure you can find an eye-clean SI1 with non-harmful inclusions not located on the very edges, but if I were in your shoes, I wouldnt dismiss a nice H/VS2 stone.. or even a nice ideal cut I color... There are plenty of pictures posted showing how white an I colored stone can look
