There is a very personal and often an added cultural basis favoring buying the ultimate diamond for an engagement ring. For this reason a relatively small cross section of diamond consumers choose to purchase a diamond with a premium being paid for cut quality. Such a premium price is based on added costs and added weight loss getting such a stone cut and polished, but the human eye can't see much difference from a stone slightly less well cut in most all cases. The ES type stones are still superbly cut. There are further compromises that many choose to make by purchasing GIA XXX types or GIA VG VG VG types and every combination of EX-VG in between. Many of these diamonds do not look far different than the very finest cut diamonds. Some will say they can see the difference and others rely on what they are being told. People buy the very finest cut diamonds for the inner satisfaction of purchasing some part of perfection, not because they are visibly superior in any highly visible way. Of course, a premium that others pay willingly is a validation of their belief that it is worth the extra money. People who buy other, competing, finely cut and well cut diamonds view the ACA premium price as not the added cost they wish to pay. Those folks may decide to pay a premium for a competing fine cut in hopes the one they chose is superior or a better value. It is difficult to know what motivates the most particular buyers, but their perception of value is their personal view and businesses cater to niche audiences when money is willingly being spent.

In the end, you have to satisfy your inner needs. It is a gift representing your love and commitment. We often say with a gift, it is the thought that counts, but when it comes to diamonds there is no question that the diamond often represents the particular character of the giver and the recipient and for that, you may be the best judge.

Oldminer,

Thank you so much for such an insightful and detailed response. I truly appreciate your time and efforts in helping me making this decision.

Hi OP, I love Old Miners post as it delves in the inner motivations, however, from a practical perspective...I think the ES you selected is so close to being an ACA, but just missed the mark so that would be my choice as I doubt you could see the difference IRL.

Based on the big difference in price I'd pick the ES stone.

I think both diamonds are lovely and either one would be a great choice. The ES would save you quite a bit of money.
