I stopped in to the store today to have the battery replaced in my Michele watch. The sales lady took the watch to show it to the manager because I guess she wasn't sure if they could work on that brand. The manager looked it and said (rather loudly) "Yes, it's a Swiss watch. A LOW END Swiss watch... I looked at him and the sales lady because I wasn't sure he had seen me standing there or knew that I had heard him. The sales lady looked very uncomfortable but turned back to me and said that they would have to send the watch out to be repaired. I smiled, took the watch back, thanked her and stated I would take it somewhere else. The manager looked up at this point with a very weird expression on his face, kind of like why was I bothering them. I told him that I was taking my "low end" watch to another jeweler to be serviced. He looked stunned and said "I said it was Low end-Swiss watch!" As I was walking out, I replied, "you still called my watch low end. I came to have my watch serviced, not to hear your opinion on my choice in brands". I'm not sure that I handled it as gracefully as I could have but I really think that there was absolutely no cause for the manager to say that! I took it to a local jewler instead who had the battery replaced in about 10 minutes and was very professional.

That would make me angry. What does the price of the watch have anything to do with them being able to replace the battery??? but I'm not a big watch person. The $300 paid for my citzen eco-drive was shocking to me (I'm more of a timex person) but at least I don't need to replace batteries anymore.

Good for you! In a service industry, that manager should be much more cautious about how he comments on a customers items. Bad form, mr manager, bad form.

Ouch. Unprofessional manager.

Glad to hear you said to them why you were leaving. Hopefully someone will be repremanded. I had a similar experience at Jared's and others have, as well. They put down my jewelery with insults.

They must have some serious management issues if this happens in different parts of the country...

You should have told him that you decided to take it to a high end jewelry store. What a dumbass.

I wish I could think on my feet enough to come up with an answer like that! :appl:

You exhibited infinitely more grace and class than Jared's manager did.

Omg, this is good!!

Yeah, what a jerk - what could he possibly have been thinking? Why in the world would an SA say something like that? Is he that much of an idiot? It boggles the mind.

Good for you for saying something Mrsacornblue - you handled the situation really well and what you said was perfect.

Most definitely!!! What a moron, who has no business managing squat!!

How rude! Your experience is enough to make me never step foot in a Jared's store!

It makes me wonder what kind of watch he was wearing..........jerk.

Wow, I don't doubt this though.

A few years ago, I was in the market for a sapphire pendant or emerald pendant. I went into a jared not intending to buy but because it was next door to a Starbucks I was about to go into. When I asked the sales person for emeralds and sapphires, she directed me to a case and told me that was their selection. The case she brought me to was "man made". I asked where the natural ones were from the ground and she was trying to conince me that the man made emeralds and sapphries were better than natural and why would I want to waste my money on lesser quality.

Also same trip, got a repair quote on an earring and they told me $450 to resodder a platinum post to the basket (that had come off). I ended up getting the job done at an independent store for $150.

Our thoughts exactly!! The Saturday before Mothers day I stopped into Jareds to get sized. I am having a ring made by GOG and wanted to double check my ring size. I walked into the store and NOBODY even looked up from their important work to acknowledge me. I walked around looking at displays waiting for some one to look up. They were either with a customer (male) or dusting! While I was waiting 3 men came in to the store ,at different times. Each time the door opened all heads popped up "good afternoon, someone will be right with you" . A salesman came out of the back and scurried over to the first one. I was completly ignored. I guess I did not look like a Mothers day customer.
Too bad too because I collect Pandora beads and my husband had said if I saw anything I liked call him in from the parking lot and he would be happy to get it. There was a very important game on the radio!!
To test my theory I sent him in and sure enough he was greeted with can we help you and he responded "no thanks, you ignored my wife, just wanted to tell you we will do our diamond shopping elsewhere. and walked out.

Wow, rude and a con job. Thanks for the info -- we have a Jared's here that I've never been into. Now I don't have to bother!

I love your husband!!!! What a perfect answer! I think Mrsacornblue may want to think about writing a letter to head office - you could even refer them to this thread on PS where other's are chiming in with their experiences - which are bound to be countrywide and equally as varied.

I never cease to be amazed at how customer service seems to have fallen (OMG - I just sounded like my parent's/grandparent's when I read that!!) With the global economy being what it is, and the disposable income of the majority ever shrinking, I can't get over how companies still snub shoppers or treat them poorly. Why risk a lost sale? treat everyone equally and respectfully - you never know who is in your store at any moment. What is the purpose of treating a consumer rudely - so you can prove you are far superior than us??? Hmmm..

We are really quite fortunate to have the wonderful PS vendors that we do and have such awesome (and mostly superior) service experiences. Thank you, PS vendors, for doing a great job - hats off to you folks!

Good for you! I can't stand people like that.

Never go where snootiness is de rigueur.

(Jewelry chains with subpar gems should worry about what internet buying is doing to their stores. P*ssing off potential customers seems rather . . . dumb . . . as marketing strategies go.)

Elisateach-good for your husband! I love that!

This sort of thing pissed me off to no end when we were shopping for e-rings. The sales people would ONLY talk to my fiance, and basically ignore everything I said, until he said "She's the one who knows about jewelry and is making all the decisions." The place we ended up buying from was one of only two, of over a dozen stores we went to, that didn't do that.

When I was researching jewelers with my mom to find someone to repair her wedding ring and then to make her anniversary ring for next year, we went to a whole bunch more - same basic "ignore the ladies" approach at all except those two, and a neighborhood jeweler who I'd never been to before (but was our final choice because it was an antique ring and the jeweler repairs tons of antiques). We even had someone tell my mother that she would have to be crazy to want to repair her old ring when she could buy a new one.
