Well, here we go!

It's lame that anyone has to stand in line at all. Our only option here is to vote by absentee ballot so it really makes it super easy and I am guessing increases the numbers of active voters. Our ballots arrived in the mail and we can either send them back by mail or use a drop box!

The only thing I have to say about the result is how much it makes me laugh to see conservative voters who are disappointed start threatening to move to Canada or Australia.

Let me know how that goes. Australia: land of the unmarried, atheist female prime minister. Mandatory government medical coverage. Living assistance for single parents, older adults, students, heck, even regular families! Relatively high taxes. Unopposed abortion access. A population majority that openly supports marriage equality. A nearly complete ban of gun ownership.

I think it might be like a Californian upset about the failed marriage equality movement threatening to head for Mississippi.

Edited: monarch, you were writing at the same time I was and I wasn't targeting you with this post - I was referring to some of the threats I've seen on FB and Twitter. :))

hahaha Someone told me that they wanted to leave if Obama was re-elected. She said there was nowhere to go though because there are too many gangs in Mexico and they don't allow guns in Canada and they like to collect guns. I just scratched my head at that one!

i'd give Obama a lot of credit for winning the election in sucha poor economy.

Where did she get the idea that "guns" were not allowed in Canada? As far as I know, Canada is a country that hunts. They just don't have a propensity for slaughtering schoolchildren in their nursery school classrooms. At least yet (who would have thought it would happen in Norway, after all?).

I have NO idea how she came up with that idea. She started on about all her political beliefs in a monologue (while our kids were playing together!) and barely let me speak and after going on for an extended period of time, I thought it best to just not say anything to counter her comments and make certain our kids don't interact outside of school ever again!

I tend to agree DF. I was not confident going into last night and only eased up when I saw that BBC had called it.

BTW, did anyone else see that Puerto Rico voted that they want to become a state? Why aren't the news stations covering this?!

IK, That is really nice. Your mother has talent ;)

I think it will be tight, and I hope we know the result by morning.

I'm a bit disappointed. Of my 80+ students, only a handful are voting. They're in college, and most of them say they just don't care. And THEN, the ones who do care, believe that their vote doesn't count anyway so why bother?

That is disappointing Haven. I confess to thinking the same thoughts over the years but I still always vote no matter because it is a right and responsibility and so very important, So sad that all young people don't feel the same.

I couldn't vote! The line is too stinking long!

It's 7 here, and the line is at least 3 hours long. The polls are supposed to close at 7. All the people in line at 7 will get to vote, so that means the count won't be final until at least 10.

They loaded up our ballots with a TON of long winded BS constitutional amendments, which are like a convoluted book to read, and no one (apparently) read the sample ballots they got in the mail. So each person in my dorky state is taking at least 20 minutes to vote. I'm pretty sure it's all on purpose.

This is the first time, since I worked so hard to become a citizen, that I haven't voted.
:nono:

That really sucks iLander! I am so sick of all the darn lines for everything!!! Gas, voting, what's next? Bread and milk?? Ugh, lately I am feeling like we live in some 3rd world country. Very depressing. In the future may I recommend voting by absentee ballot. It seems like that is gaining a lot of popularity and no lines guaranteed! (Not sure where you live but they have extended the time period for voting in certain areas due to the hurricane).

Missy, I know you don't mean it this way, but "like we live in some 3rd world country" is kind of insulting, no? I hate net nannying as much as anyone else here...I wonder if you could re-phrase?

I voted early. My husband ran for local office. He campaigned for over a year. We bought a house, got married, had a baby in the past year. We are hopeful that things will turn around. We happen to be mere peons in the grand American scheme but would have absolutely no problem leaving this country if we don't see hope and change as promised.

Monarch, I didn't mean to offend anyone with that statement- sorry I offended you and anyone else. I have friends from Haiti and they came here because life was tough there for them and basically I was just saying that waiting hours upon hours to get gas, vote etc is a tough way to live. Sort of like living in a 3rd world country where life can be and often is difficult. Not making any value judgments about people who love living there though.

I think you missed her point. Many in 3rd world countries don't even have the option to stand in line for gas or to vote.

I meant about life being more difficult there but your point is well taken. I didn't mean the words "third world country" as a pejorative term.I did not use the term to indicate a country that is somehow less than a first world country. I used it to refer to those living a more difficult life. Filled with hardships. That is what I meant and I think most got that. I didn't want to insult anyone living there and I spoke with my friends (who are from Haiti) about this very thread and they did not take offense.

Thank you Forte.

And some third world countries are very well off, with easy access to plentiful good food, clean drinking water, round the clock power, modern medicine and more. There is no standing in line for regular staples and supplies.

Waiting in line to vote is not exactly a hard life... I think I know what you meant, sort of!

And + to what Chrono said... I think people seem to have a serious misconception of what a "3rd world country" is actually like.

I know what she meant.

And we ARE lucky to have what we do have because some people don't in certain parts of the world.
Even though we have poverty here in the U.S. I don't feel it can compare to what I've seen in some countries.

Missy, I'm sorry for calling you out, I wanted to convey in my original post that I knew you did not mean it the way I and others might have perceived it. I probably shouldn't have been reading this thread and participating in it at that time. I definitely had too much wine that evening. I respect, and like you, and while I was making an effort to be gentle, should not have been judgy. I notice about myself that I waver between being too PC or not PC enough sometimes. Anyway...thank you for your understanding and consideration of my point.

Thank you innerkitten!

And thank you Monnie- I appreciate that. I feel the same about you.
