well cut 2.5ct K from a reputable vendor....too yellow?

OK, I am narrowing it down, thanks for all the help so far. The last diamond I posted was a 2.02 H/Si2 eye clean in the FIC spectrum. It checks out. Looking at diamonds locally, I couldn't help but notice how much larger a 2.5ct looked; it looked like "the" size I wanted.

Going the other spectrum, I can get a beautiful 2.5ct K stone, ideal cut, at around the same price. I would love to get into this size. I know personal preference....but as a lay-person, under normal lighting conditions, will she be happy with this diamond? She isn't picky, just wants something I put a lot of effort into buying for her. It will eventually be put into a 3-stone setting, perhaps sapphires on the sides.

There's no way to know if a K is too yellow for her.

Actually, there is only one person who knows.

A K is too warm for me, but the only opinion that matters here is your GF's opinion, so ask her if you have doubts.

You mention that eventually you may make a 3 stone ring. With a 2.5 centre, that provides a lot of finger coverage...have you thought of that? Will she be comfortable wearing a three stone of this proportion?

If you get the H color "smaller" stone--it is a great color and desirable size--and even if that ends up in a three stone ring, it will be significant then!

K color in a modern cut is tricky. With antique stones, I find that most of my buyers love some warmth in their OEC's or Cushions, in fact I personally wear a K colored OEC and adore it. But I frequently hear that the same people who love warmth in an old cut don't care for it in modern cuts. So it's going to be tricky to guess what her color thresholds are. An H is much safer if you don't know for sure that she loves the look of a K. A K will show body color, especially at 2.5ct and especially if you set into a very open setting (versus a bezel with closed basket, for example, where less of the stone is visible and color is less apparent).

There's also a stigma surrounding lower colored diamonds, out in the real (aka, non-Pricescope educated) world, where people often treat lower colors with negative commentary. This is something that you should also think about - how will she react when someone grabs her hand to see her new engagement ring, then proclaims, "Oh, is that a yellow diamond?" or "Oh, it's kind of yellow isn't it?" Will she feel deflated? One thing I've learned is that lower colors can be exceptionally beautiful, and I personally prefer them over colorless diamonds, BUT you have to go into it knowing that you'll get snotty comments about color. It kind of has to be a be a conscious decision made by a person who wants to flaunt the diamond's warmth and defy the usual engagement ring stereotypes.

Good luck with your search - a 2ct H RB will be amazing - I know that I would have flipped over such a stone! And if you plan to eventually set it into a 3-stone, the finger coverage will be massive. A 2.5ct with side stones might be too big!

My Asian clients tend to be very color sensitive and it would rarely be a good choice for them.

Color is such a personal thing, so it is good to be working with a vendor who will allow you to show her the diamond and return it if the answer is, "No".

Depends on the person, some prefer an ice white diamond, others compromise with a H or an I, for other ladies colour doesn't matter they just want the biggest stone they can afford.... If in doubt let her try on some K colour stones and see how you feel about them or as the others have suggested buy from a vendor with a good return policy. You could put sapphires next to a K or whiter stones, again it boils down to individual tastes there are no right and wrong answers.

I had a K stone before and my current stone is an I.
On its own the color didn't bother me (when worn as a solitaire with no wedding band) but the stones in my wedding band were whiter than a K and the contrast made the center stone LOOK even yellower than it was, so it really bugged me.

Yup. no offense to TS but Asian will tend to say Eeew so yellow etc... n how it may look darker when set. Especially peer pressure. also, i dont think they really store much of the I , J onwards diamonds

However, with $ and colors/clarity/carat going in the same linear line, its not easy to stay within the budget and wanting the best of everything. Thats why now i am looking at K too for a 1+carat after getting an E VVS1 0.42 in my younger days.
I cannot accept spending that amount of money on a .... ah hem... stone

I am also thinking of having side stones and yes, the idea of having some D-F melee by the side n showing contrast of how yellow that K diamond is going to be... i think thats going to really bug me too. so i am now thinking real hard of the design too. i dread it makes the center stone outstanding for the wrong reason
