Weird question about school pick ups

Hi wise PS Folks

This is a really odd question but tomorrow is Halloween and I want to pick my son up while dressed as the grim reaper.

The idea is to wait for him outside his classroom like I usually do every day and ambush him as he gets out of class. Is this in poor taste as I may scare the other kids?

I really want to do it and it'll give him a good Halloween scare that is a bit different.
 
How old is your son and the other children he waits with?

How scary is your costume?
 
If he's above 2nd grade I think you might embarrass him, maybe not. I'm with HC with her reply basically.
 
My school district has banned Halloween costumes for the past 2 years. I think it is overkill, but it is what it is. You might want to check with the school. I would say don't do it. Especially in our current climate, you might upset other parents.

Kindy, they are about 5-6yo.

Not very scary. Scythe, black robe and skull mask.
 
Is there a way you can orchestrate this fun somewhere else? I dunno, i can see some parents being very protective about this.

Personally, I would be ok with it. I would think you were having fun with your child and would have good feelings about that fact. Even IF you scared my child, I would use it as a learning experience....”Halloween is about scary costumes. That’s only a lady in the costume.” We would ask you to remove your mask to teach my son that everything was ok...etc.

But some parents can be different. This is why I feel uneasy about this. It shouldn’t be a big deal. Somehow it has gotten to the point to where we have to overthink this.

I say practice your best judgement. If it were me, I would use the wisdom of “when in doubt, don’t.”

I agree with House Cat, I would be OK with it, and my kids would have been at that age too. I was just pointing out the school may not be, and other parents may not be.
 
Granted it sounds like fun, who doesn't like to give their kid a good scare once in a while. However schools have become very protective in the wake of all the school violence (understandably) and I would worry that some parent wouldn't really get it and call the police. You just don't know with people these days. I can see it scaring an adult or child and going really badly.

Our schools ban masks of any kind, so I’d call the school and ask. I’d maybe wake your kiddo tomorrow morning in costume and not risk scaring other kids. I know that would terrify my daughter and she’d have nightmares and trouble sleeping (yes, she’s Uber sensitive :confused2:).
 
To be honest, I wouldn’t do it on school property. Some kindergarteners are much younger emotionally than others (some are emotionally immature or spectrum, some regularly cry for their moms or for things like a dropped lunch. Some regularly pee in their pants, bite others, and forget to eat or drink.) Honestly you run the risk of really traumatizing some of them. To me, it’s not something I would do, to try to scare and ambush any five year olds... My son is in first grade (speaking from experience).
 
Thanks guys for the insight. Really appreciate it. I've arranged to have his Aunt pick him up and I'll hide behind a tree and scare him on the way home.

We don't have other kids walking along our street. As for him he'll have a good scare and then call me crazy mummy (he and I get up to a lot of mischief, he's used to me. He did a speech at school where he told the entire assembly mummy was rogue and not a very sensible adult).
 
I probably wouldn't do it at school based on the climate we currently live in.
 
I would not be ok with this. At all.

And, I seriously doubt the school would be ok with your plan. And, if they are, I'd be deeply concerned about the school.
 
I love this idea @mellowyellowgirl of having his aunt pick him up and scaring him on the way home lol!

Total aside but a few years ago I was waiting at the bus stop for my son and I look up and there is this kid dressed as the grim reaper trying to scare the cars driving by. He would run and hide behind a tree and then come running to get to the corner in time. It was hysterical!
 
Yes, it's a much better idea to do this at home.

Probably a bad idea and likely not permitted by school. (Masks are often not allowed even if costumes are...). I would be worried that other kids may be scared as each kid is different. I would expect other adults at the school may not be thrilled that someone in a mask wearing a robe that could conceal anything was hanging around.

No not at school. In the uk we had a phase of people dressing as clowns out in public and scaring people. The media didn’t help because it was all about killer clowns. But I work in a school and it made even some older kids nervous

Here in the states also.
A friend of the family is a professional clown(parties, events and shows) and advertises on her car and had a lot of problems.

I had been reading along, absolutely horrified, remembering how many little children had phobias about clowns, and then I saw this posting. I must have been very tense indeed because when I read it, I burst out laughing! Thank you for your good sense and wisdom, Karl!

My good lady was chased down the road by her sister wearing a Scream mask when she was younger.

30+ years later she still cannot deal with people wearing those big character costumes (like Disney or mascots) unless she's seen their face beforehand.
 
As a former school teacher it sounds like a bad idea.
